  • In this post, I wanted to bring some awareness to how anxiety can be manifested in individuals who are high achievers and push themselves beyond their limits to accomplish their goals, but are internally hurting. High functioning anxiety is not an official diagnosis because it does not necessarily cause disruption or impairment in life activities or a change in behavior to avoid situations. However, mental health professionals recognize that anxiety disorders have varying degrees of impairment. Currently, high functioning anxiety may be identified or diagnosed as mild anxiety, but this may not completely justify how this anxiety is manifested internally versus how it is expressed externally. It may also possible that the symptoms of the Impostor Syndrome I’ve been discussing in my last few posts overlap with this type of anxiety. β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €β €
A person with high functioning anxiety may seem to be doing fine on the outside because they can β€œpower through” and get the job done. Yet, internally, they may be experiencing increased heart rate, racing thoughts, intense fears, and even insomnia. Mental health professionals are just starting to acknowledge the symptoms of high functioning anxiety and the difficulty in identifying it. An important question to ask would be whether one is progressing in life or just trying to survive. .

Note: I am offering a free workshop in collaboration with Sahar (@saharmandi_comm - Harvard trained communications consultant) that teaches some incredible tips on how to speak with confidence and feel valued for what you bring to the table (check link in bio).
