This video shows the entire process that goes into making one of my mugs, from throwing the basic shape, to refining it, attaching a handle, glazing it and finally bringing it up to 1290ºc in a reduction atmosphere in my gas kiln.

My mugs have simple shapes really, the body is thrown as straight sided cylinder, once wired off and allowed to dry out overnight they can be trimmed on my specially made chuck. This fits inside the mug and supports the base and means I can trim the entire outside shape and base without anything like lumps of clay or clamping arms getting in the way. Then, once the shape has firmed up a little bit more I can attach the handle, I pull mine as thick blanks first before attaching those to the mug and pulling them finer. Once these are on they must be dried slowly to bone dry before they’re bisque fired to 1000ºc.

Out of the bisque the mugs have their bases coated in a wax resist, (with a very basic wax emulsion most pottery suppliers will sell). Then they’re dunked into a raw material laden liquid, also known as glaze, the water is absorbed into the porous clay leaving a thick layer of feldspar, china clay, talc, and other materials on the surface. Next, and usually the following day once all the moisture has left the mug, the bases are very carefully cleaned up with a damp sponge, the wax never stops everything. The tong marks are cleaned up too with either my fingers or a knife and once all tidy they’re ready to be packed into my KG-340 Rohde gas kiln.

Once completely packed it’s sealed up and the final firing begins. I take the kiln up gradually to 860ºc and then initiate reduction by upping the gas and air pressure and closing the dampers above the flues. This causes reduction to take place, a firing with a lack of oxygen that creates colours and surfaces that aren’t achievable in electric kilns. I continue firing up until 1290ºc, slowly lessening the reduction until my cones are all bent at more or less the right angle. Then I switch it off, crash cool to 1000ºc by opening the dampers and spy holes, and finally close it up to cool much more slowly over a period of two days. At 150ºc I crack.
