I would love to share a letter which Abraham Lincoln wrote to his son's teacher when he started going to school. He clearly speaks his thougts through his words and shows how great a person he was. I posted the pics in serial order from first page to last page and there is also a translated letter in Punjabi for the readers who doesn't know English very well. #bookstagram #books #biography #abrahamlincoln #americanpresident #letter #america #teacher #student #relation #writer #mukhtarsinghgoraya #shareit

  • Teddy Roosevelt and his 1876 Winchester rifle. Mr. Roosevelt lived a pretty full life and was a true conservationist.

Very cool photo of Teddy Roosevelt in the mid 1880’s courtesy of @a_hunters_legacy. Roosevelt was perhaps decades ahead of his time, said by many to be the "conservationist president." Roosevelt understood the need for wilderness preservation hence the 230 million acres of public lands he helped establish during his presidency.

  • Hope does not only appeal to our humorous side, it also continues to exert considerable influence in politics and activism.
In our recent past, G F Watts's painting inspired Barack Obama, who gave a rousing address on ‘The Audacity of Hope’ in the run up to his presidential election. Hope’s underlying message of the potential to triumph despite adversity had awakened Obama in 1990s Chicago to the plight of African-American citizens. It informed his understanding of the daily struggles, which they had faced in the past and continued to encounter in modern America. Hope showed Obama, as it had shown Jeremiah Wright before him, that the single note played by Hope was all that was needed to overcome adversity. With that ember, Wright had encouraged his congregation to progress the stories ‘of survival, and freedom, and hope’ of ordinary black people. With that resounding note, Barack Obama fuelled his campaign to become President.

Obama and Wright come from a long line of African-American leaders inspired by Hope. The painting visualised a language of struggle, which connected right to the heart of the African-American Civil Rights Movement and inspired Martin Luther King, Jr. and Frederick G. Sampson. It’s exciting to see so many activists emboldened by Watts’s imagination.

If you are enjoying this special Hope takeover, please donate to our #Hope2020 campaign and help us save Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village, a national treasure.

Did you know, an 11-year-old kid wrote a letter to Mr. Abraham Lincoln asking him to grow a beard?
Here is the story ......
.
.
President Abraham Lincoln is known for his many groundbreaking political moves that changed the face of America. As the 16th President of the United States, he is remembered for abolishing slavery, leading the Union to victory in the Civil War, and issuing other transformational policies. He is also known for one more thing his featured beard. A Young girl named Grace Bedell wrote Lincoln a letter on October 15, 1860, only a few weeks before he was elected President. She urged him to grow a beard because she believed it would improve his chances of winning. She explained that since he had a narrow face, a beard would look much more appealing and would encourage people to believe in him as their president. You would look a great deal better, for your face is so thin. This is one of the facts that many people do not know about Abraham Lincoln’s beard.

  • What is Mr. Trump cooking up?

First this statement in Twitter, then he goes everywhere without mask. Next he praises China for its quick reaction to the virus, and finally you can read his statement that there won't be a second lock down in the USA in case of a second wave of infection.

God protect America and the whole world - but in the first place against this man who will surely go down in history as one of the most incapable presidents of the United States.

  • Just to disagree somewhat with my own posted quote, I think we definitely need to acknowledge the talent, genius and education of those in the world around us. However, what resonates about this quote is the idea of persistence. It is a common theme for many who are neuro diverse or experience learning differences. • I’m sure every American who was out on this beautiful Memorial Day was wondering why our great flag was flying at half-staff this morning. I was fortunate enough to find out that answer last year when I was lucky enough to visit the Eisenhower home and farm; which thankfully still to this day is intact and fully preserved. Dwight or Ike as he affectionately nicknamed was not only one of the most respected military generals in the world but in my humble opinion he is also among the best presidents to serve in the Oval Office. It is sad that his legacy is unfortunately forgotten. Anyway, the reason why the American flags are flown at half-staff until noon on Memorial Day is to honor the fallen men and women in uniform. Then, the rest of the day the flag is raised proudly to salute those men and women who with Gods grace was fortunate enough to return home. It was truly an honor being at the Eisenhower farm to literally see everything that Ike held in such high regard from his private book collection which composed of many Teddy Roosevelt biographies to the portrait of Abe Lincoln in his private study it was surreal. • I am not an advocate for frequent changes in laws and Constitutions. But laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind. As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstances, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors. -Thomas Jefferson .

  • Honoring those who fell in service to our nation is what this Memorial Day weekend is all about. And our MONDAY MYSTERY destination is a place where we symbolically come together as a nation to do so. It began its life as a military burial grounds during the civil war, on land that was confiscated from the family of George Washington. And American soldiers from every war ever fought, going back even to the Revolution, have been interred here. But it was really the death and burial of an assassinated President that cemented its prestige within the national psyche.
🇺🇸
Some interesting numbers about this place: 🔹400,000 people are buried here, including two POTUS, numerous Supreme Court Justices including Thurgood Marshall, murdered civil rights leader Medgar Evers, boxing legend Joe Louis, big band leader and composer Glenn Miller, and over 40 astronauts…including John Glenn.
🔹25-30 funeral services take place each day (except Sundays), during which the flags flying through the cemetery are flown at half-mast.
🔹60 approved ‘emblems of faith’ used to denote religious affiliations on the headstones
🔹24 hours a day-365 days a year the ’Tomb of the Unknowns’ is guarded by the 3rd US Infantry. The tomb symbolically represents the unidentified soldiers from WW1, WW2, the Korean War and the Vietnam war. There are also approximately 5000 unknown soldiers buried within the grounds.
🔹$92.07: the amount of taxes the US government claimed were in default on the property in 1862, which allowed it to be confiscated from the great granddaughter of George Washington, who happened to be married to…Robert E. Lee.
🇺🇸
Can you guess which of the national cemeteries is our MONDAY MYSTERY destination? There are over 140 to choose from within the US, but none as famous as this one. Go ahead and put your best guess in the comments. And tag someone who you think would enjoy solving the mystery too. Remember that I always offer additional clues during the THINKING THURSDAY post later in the week. I hope you have a safe holiday, and one that honors those who gave their lives for our survival. ⭐️

  • Happy Memorial Day! "As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them." John F. Kennedy

In celebration, we present the "Three Flags," painted by the American artist, Jasper Johns, in 1958.

He crafted this masterpiece from 3 canvasses painted with hot wax and arranging them in a tiered fashion, each one about 25% smaller than the one right below it, creating a three-dimensional aspect.

These US flags were painted to resemble the 48 states from the year 1958, in a blue canton on a field of thirteen alternating red and white stripes.

To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City bought the painting for $1 million in 1980 from the art collectors Burton and Emily Hall Tremaine.
