  • Divine Inspiration 'Law Of God'

Three youths went for Swamishri's blessings. One of them said, "I am a law student. Please bless me that I do well in my studies." Swamishri blessed the youngster and asked him, "Do you have any addictions?" "I sometimes take alcoholic drinks when I go out with friends," the youth admitted. "Are you forced to drink?" inquired Swamishri. "Not really," replied the youth. "I just join in because all my friends drink." "Would you join in and take poison if all your friends did?" countered Swamishri. "Of course not, Swamiji," the youth replied. "Well then," said Swamishri, "alcohol is nothing but poison. People drink for sophistication and sociability but they become argumentative and obnoxious." The youth listened attentively as Swamishri continued. "You are an intelligent law student. But there is another Law - the Law of God - which forbids alcoholic drinks and other intoxicants. From today, take a vow to observe this Law of God." The youth realized his mistake and vowed never to take another drink.

Swamishri and Youths

Question: What type of youth would please you most?

Swamishri: A youth who follows a pure and simple life, regulated by obeying the commands of God and the Guru.

Question: What is your message to the youth of today?

Swamishri: Aimlessness, corruption, drug abuse, violence and intoxication have infected the youth of today. We must return to a life based on the eternal values of man - values such as truth, love, compassion and character.

Question: Why are so many youths attracted to this Sanstha?

Swamishri: "Yogiji Maharaj pioneered the youth organization. He reserved a major part of his heart for youngsters. His love had room for all their questions and emotions and this explains why young collegians rushed to be with him wherever he was. Yogiji Maharaj used to say, "Youths are as dear to me as my heart." #baps #bapsprasang #pramukhswamimaharaj #mahantswamimaharaj #divine #soul #spiritual #life #joy #love #care #happiness #faith #culture #happy #smile #peace #inspiration #spiritual #satpurush #divine #memories #moment #peaceful #bapsphotos #bapsmedia #jayswaminarayan

  • Divine Inspiration 'The Greatest Antique'

In New York, Swamishri's residence was at the home of a devotee called Harshadbhai. One morning, Harshadbhai said, "Swamiji, an interesting incident occurred just a few days ago. While cleaning one of his rooms, an American man happened to come across an old photograph frame. He opened the frame and to his surprise, he found the original copy of the Declaration of American Independence. Since people value antique items in his country, someone bought the Letter of Declaration from him for 4 million dollars." Hearing this, Swamishri commented, "People value things that are antique. But we fail to realize that God is the greatest of all antiques and therefore He is the most valuable object of all."
God is Eternal. He has always existed. Can there be anything older than God? Therefore God should be the ultimate antique for any collector. God is priceless. Swamishri holds this priceless God, in his every pore.

A Few Words

Swamishri's arrival in Nairobi was met by Yogiji Maharaj's 99th birthday celebrations on 10 June 1991. After presiding over a packed assembly of more than 3000 devotees and well-wishers who attended the celebration, Swamishri arrived at his place of residence. The festivities were not quite over because hundreds of devotees, youth volunteers and children had gathered there to keep the celebration spirit going. A devotee named Harshadbhai Rana suddenly announced, "Now Swamishri will say a few words on this memorable day." Swamishri laughed and said, "I have been requested to say only a few words so here they are : "Brahma satya, jagat mithya." ("God is real and the world is illusory.") Hearing this, Harshadbhai Rana said, "But Swamiji, what you have just said is very difficult to apply in our lives. What is the use of it?" Swamishri looked at Harshadbhai straight in the eye and said emphatically, "It is definitely applicable, otherwise the great sadhus of the past would never have uttered such words. Whatever the great souls have said Turns out to be true. They only speak the truth. We can see the truth in their words, because the world is nothing but an illusion. The joys of the world are of a temporary nature, ever changing. We can experience the change ourselves. Before, we were young and now we are old. We can see the transformation directly. But this truth cannot be fully realized until the heart is illumined. If we continue to associate with saint persons, our heart will be illumined and we will be able to apply the words in our life." Swamishri's brief talk was not a matter of verbose philosophy, but experience. He had direct experience of God and can lead us to the same, only if we adhere to his sadhuly association.

He Lives For God

The local Jain community in Nairobi had invited Swamishri to a luncheon at their mandir. Before lunch was served, the trustees of the Jain mandir desired to hold a small function in honor of Swamishri. A nice stage had been built for the occasion, near the dining area. A packed assembly of well-wishers had gathered to receive Swamishri.

When Swamishri arrived to take his place on the stage, he noticed there was only one decorated chair on the stage. The trustees urged Swamishri to take his place on that chair.

But Swamishri politely refused and stood silently on the stage for a minute or two. The sadhus quickly realized that Swamishri was reluctant to sit on the decorated chair because there we no other arrangements made on the stage to place Thakorji.

The organizers ran hastily to fetch another chair but by then Swamishri had placed Thakorji on the decorated chair and he himself sat on a simple wooden chair.

Everybody in the assembly experienced how Swamishri is singularly devoted to God.

He always directs all honors to the Lord first.

For Swamishri, God is everything.

He lives for God.

  • Divine Inspiration 'Keep Satsang at Heart'

Each year the tradition of Raksha Bandhan (festival symbolizing the bond of protection, in which sisters tie rakhdis - a decorative bracelet made of sponge, cloth or paper - on the wrist of their brothers) reminds us of a true sister-brother relationship.

In 1990, this tradition meant a lot more for the devotees in London because Swamishri was present at the time. There was added joy for the male devotees because Swamishri individually tied rakhdis on their wrists during the evening assembly.

A youth who had missed out on the ceremony, because he was engaged in seva, was later standing outside Swamishri's room. "Come here," called Swamishri. "Let me tie a rakhdi on your wrist." The youth's joy knew no bounds as he began to roll his sleeve up to enable Swamishri to tie the rakhdi. "Now what will you give in return?" asked Swamishri. "Anything, Swamishri. Anything you ask for," the youth showed his readiness.

Swamishri looked in the youth's eyes and said, "I don't want money or materials. All I ask of you is to keep Satsang (religion) at heart. Don't ever fall from it." This is all that Swamishri really wants from us - for the one who has the Lord has indeed nothing worldly to ask for.

Following the Will of Bhagatji

Cholera broke out in Mahuva. Vitthalbhai's daughter-in-law contracted it. Whenever anybody else prayed to Bhagatji Maharaj to cure a victim of cholera, he would ask him to offer oil to Hanumanji. Vitthalbhai tried this, but his daughter-in-law was not cured. So he went to Bhagatji Maharaj and said, "I offered oil to Hanumanji but it was of no avail." Bhagatji told him, "Who had asked you to offer oil to Hanumanji?" Vitthalbhai replied, "I did it because you had asked so many others to do so."
Bhagatji smiled and said, "You can't succeed if you follow your own will, without my command. Now I command you to go again and offer oil to the murti of Hanumanji that has been installed by Shriji Maharaj." He carried out the orders and soon his daughter-in-law was cured.

Worship of the Lord

For years Jinabhai's (Yogiji Maharaj) uncle, Mohanbhai, had been perforning the morning and evening worship and service of God, in the mandir Dhari. But due to old age and frequent illness he could no longer look after the mandir properly. He sincerely wished that Jinabhai, because of his natural inclination to worship, consider performing the mandir services. He once suggested to Jinabhai that he should take up the duty. Jinabhai was overjoyed, and assured him, "Uncle, you need not worry, I will look after the daily services with all my heart".
Without a moment's delay Jinabhai engaged himself in the mandir routine, and the service of the Lord. He would bathe the murti of the Lord lovingly, apply sandalwood paste and a kumkum mark, light the lamp and the incense, and perform the arti. His heart leaped with joy whilst offering devotion to the Lord.
Besides all this, he would draw water from the well and water the plants in the compound of the mandir. Within a short time the garden in the mandir compound was filled with the sweet fragrance of flowers. Everyday in the morning Jinabhai made garlands of flowers of various colors for the Lord. He prepared varieties of dishes, as an offering to the Lord. He would serve the murti as if the Lord Himself was physically present. Quite often, he even conversed with the image. In the morning, as well as in the evening, he would bring his friends to the mandir. There, he taught them how to chant the Swaminarayan mantra. He used to sing bhajans and, asked others to sing with him. He taught them how to perform arti and also how to prostrate before the Lord. Before they left he would give them prasad.

Young Scholar

When he was seven, Dungar Bhakta (Shastriji Maharaj) made it a point to go to Vartal on every full-moon day. There he would approach the sadhus individually at their seats, listen to their discourses and enhance his gnan (knowledge) and vairagya (detachment). He had to be searched for to be taken home. He did not like to return home. He would pick up the pages of the scriptures discarded as waste by the scribes in Vartal, sit down on the verandah of the mandir in the posture of a learned shastri and read out from them. He had not even started his schooling as yet, but such conduct on his part predicted that he would be an erudite scholar in future.

An organization called Landmark Forum in London inspires positive attitude in people for progress. The chairman of the organization, Jhony Tenon, came to meet Swamishri. He explained the activities of his organization.
Swamishri enquired, “Does your organization inspire people to give up addictions?”
“If a person engages in thinking positively then it can be possible. We make basic efforts to increase the potential in people,” replied Jhony.
Swamishri responded, “A person’s potential cannot blossom in that way. The fundamental element for increasing a person’s potential is an addiction-free life. If that is the foundation of life then a person can do his duties properly.”
Swamishri contributed a new means to increasing a person’s potential. 30 April 2004, London

  • Divine Inspiration 'I Seek Your Blessings'

Thousands of devotees and well-wishers had congregated in the large assembly hall on the occasion of Swamishri's 67th birthday.

At the end of the program, the announcer said on the microphone, "Now the moment we have all be waiting for - Swamishri's blessings." As soon as the microphone was placed before Swamishri, he said, "I'm not the one to give blessings. But I seek your blessings that I may truly serve Shastriji Maharaj and Yogiji Maharaj and the great work they have initiated."
This is the ultimate in Swamishri's humility. He has not only kept the 'i' small - in his life he has no sense of "i" at all.

He is ego-less.

Divinity Revealed

In V S. 1914 Bhagatji Maharaj was going to Junagadh to pay respects to Gunatitanand Swami. He was accompanied by the devotees of Mahuva. Owing to heavy rains the river Shetrunji was flooded. The current was so powerful that the boatman and the travelers were all held up. Bhagatji encouraged the devotees by saying, "We shall remember Maharaj and Swami and so shall be able to pass across safely." So saying he led the devotees. The boatman tried to dissuade him from going across the river. But one who has the murti (image) of Maharaj and Swami before his eyes fears nothing. The water was only chest deep when they reached halfway. Even the current was not so strong. The devotees followed Bhagatji. The boatman and others who were watching the scene from the bank were amazed, and marveled at the faith and courage of the devotees.

A Wise Old Friend

Swamishri is a living altar, where people of all sorts come to be blessed.

They express their emotions and shed their sorrows.
One morning, a youth in desperation, came to Swamishri for solace and guidance.
Through his own stupidities and faults, he had lost everything that was precious to him - his family, his home, his job and his health.
"The problem is I married a girl who my parents advised me not to. So, discarding the necessary parental permission and sacred religious ceremony, I married the girl in a civil marriage - bringing shame on my family - and estranging me of their love. But now even the girl doesn't love me. She doesn't even care to see me. I am extremely miserable, because I don't want to lose her."
Swamishri listened to the youth's chain of sorrows and said, "My dear friend, please realize what you have led yourself into. Now that your wife doesn't as much as care to even see you, why do you insist on holding on to her? For the sake of your mad love for this girl, you have lost the love of your parents and brother. On top of that you have lost this divine Satsang and now you're courting total disaster. (As a result of his depression, the youth had resorted to the use of drugs)."
Swamishri continued to counsel and console the heartbroken youth.
"Now you must shake yourself up and realize what is happening to you. You are destroying yourself. How long will you bear all this? Return to Satsang once again and associate with good company. You still have everything to live for."
The youth listened to Swamishri's words of love and concern.
He conjured up enough courage and confidence to continue his precious life.
Swamishri had salvaged a sinking ship. The fallen youth found a new lease in life, which enabled him to completely restructure his future. Swamishri has a unique ability to relate to our problems, sympathize with them and then give sound advice on their solution, as a wise old friend would.

Worldly Thorns

Gunatitanand Swami had a divine method to impart knowledge along with the routine events of life. Once Swami had arrived at the farm. Meanwhile Vaghjibhai from Vaso, Jetha Khachar from Sarangpur, Abhaysinh Darbar of Lodhika and other devotees came there for Swami's darshan. They prostrated before Swami. At this juncture, somebody commented that there were thorns which might prick them. On hearing this, Swami said, "If the thorns prick us we can remove them either with a needle or any other sharp instrument; but the worldly thorns are very bad; if they prick us, there is no way to remove them." Somebody then enquired, "What are worldly thorns?" Swami replied to this enquiry with a smile, "You cannot perceive these thorns. There are thorns of beauty, music, touch with a sinful person, smell of a sinful person and of taste affecting the various senses, thorns of dilemmas in the heart, thorns of trifle insults in the mind, thorns of revenge in the brain and many other types of thorns in the world. It is difficult to remove them and they continue to prick. These thorns also totally degenerate a man spiritually. So beware of such thorns. And for this purpose Bhagwan Swaminarayan has given a new remedy and brought the rules and this Sadhu from Akshardham. Otherwise how could there be such pious behavior? Therefore, if you constantly keep the company of those who are really devoted, the worldly thorns will not prick you and you'll come out unscathed." #baps #bapsprasang #parmukhswamimaharaj #mahantswamimaharaj #devine #soul #spirtuality #life #satpurush #joy #love #care #happiness #smile #faith #culture #peace #inspiration #spiritual #memories #moments #bapsphoto #bapsmedia #bapscharity #bapsmumbai

Simple Nature

Swamishri arrived in London on 7th April 1988 to commence his 12th foreign tour. In the evening, a grand welcome assembly was held in the mandir. Thousands of devotees from all over England had come to be blessed by Swamishri's darshan. Inspite of the fact that Swamishri was weary after a long and tiring flight, he insisted on blessing all the devotees individually. He sat through the session looking totally relaxed and refreshed. The devotees felt enriched by Swamishri's divine contact and went away bubbling with joy. Towards the end of the session, an aged devotee came to Swamishri with his young grandson Romin. "Romin keeps telling me he wants to see Swamishri's janoi (sacred thread)," remarked the old man.

Swamishri immediately lifted his gataryu (upper cloth) and showed Romin his Janoi. The little boy's heart filled with excitement, his long cherished dream had been fulfilled. He trotted away happily behind his grandfather.
To us, Romin's wish sounds small and irrelevant. But for Romin, it meant the world. Swamishri always has time for children.

He has a simple nature where all sorts of wishes and emotions find their fulfillment.

Jinabhai's Courage

Jinabhai (Yogiji Maharaj) came into the Fifth standard. Tribhovandas was the headmaster of their school. He was a very hot-tempered man. One day, Tribhovandas severely thrashed a boy named Chandu. Jinabhai could not bear to see the boy suffer. He felt pity for Chandu, who was innocent of any wrongdoings. Jina, not knowing what to do, started chanting the name of "Swaminarayan". Chandu screamed with pain. Tribhovandas continued thrashing him until he fell down unconscious. The children ran helter-skelter from fear of the teacher. Later Chandu died as a result of the severe beating. Chandu's father reported the case to the inspector, and an inquiry was opened. The inspector came to the school to investigate. But who dare bear witness against the headmaster?

The inspector asked all the students in the class. No one was bold enough to report the truth. Jinabhai always spoke the truth whatever the consequences. When the inspector questioned Jinabhai, he felt, why should he be afraid of the headmaster. He boldly addressed the inspector, "Our headmaster mercilessly beat the innocent Chandu, until he fell to the ground." When Jinabhai spoke up, all the other students shouted with one voice, "Yes sir, it was the headmaster who beat Chandu to death." Looking closely at the forehead of Jinabhai, the inspector saw the holy tilak-chandlo mark. Innocence and honesty were written on Jina's face. He believed Jinabhai and immediately dismissed the headmaster. He also rewarded Jinabhai with a prize for speaking the truth fearlessly.

The truthful always triumph. Therefore we should not be afraid of telling the truth. We should form a habit of speaking the truth from early childhood.

  • Divine Inspiration 'We Are Nothing'

For the 400 or so students who stay at Akshar Purushottam student hostel at Vidyanagar, Swamishri's visits there are a time of great jubilation and Swamishri unfailingly visits Vidyanagar several times a year to give the students an educational and spiritual boost.

On one such occasion Swamishri and the students were sitting casually on the lush green lawn of the campus.

One of the students posed a question, "Swamishri, when people praise us, we feel good. How do you feel when people praise you?" "We feel that everything we do is due to the grace of God, so naturally, it is God who deserves all the praises and not us. We are nothing compared to God," replied Swamishri.

Swamishri has kept God in his heart. And where there is God, there is humility.

Nailing The Hood Of Sheshnag

Shastriji Maharaj required some land for putting up a gate at the entrance of the Bochasan mandir. But as the village road passed through that piece of land, the villagers were reluctant to part with it. The villagers sent an insolent person named Bechar Keesa to convey their refusal to give it. As soon as he arrived he began to speak indecently.

Swamishri, however, told him calmly, "Look, we require the land for the purpose of the mandir, and you should give it to us." After this demand, when Swamishri cast a glance at him the heart of Bechar Keesa was at once transformed. He merely asked, "How much land do you require? Please come, I shall measure it for you." Swamishri handed him a stick. Bechar measured four stick-lengths. Then Swamishri said, "Measure two more stick-lengths on our behalf." Bechar did accordingly.

Thus, land stretching as far as the place where the foundation of the gate was to be laid was procured. Swamishri immediately got the boundary marks fixed on that piece of land. Dhanji Matadar could not tolerate this. Swamishri advised him, "Matadar these pegs are fastened on the head of Sheshnag, the cobra, do not pull them out." Even so Matadar pulled out a peg. But seeing blood on the edge of the peg, he got frightened and at once threw the peg on the ground. Realizing the extent of Swamishri's power, Matadar fell at his feet and apologized for his misconduct. Swamishri, with his innate kindness, forgave him and instructed him that he should always help in the work of the mandir.

A Servant of God

In the time of Brahmaswarup Shastriji Maharaj, (the 3rd spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan) Pramukh Swami had served as the Kothari (Administrative Head) of Sarangpur mandir for several years.

In context to this, one sadhu asked Swamishri, "Did everyone address you as Kothari in those days?" "I can't remember," replied Swamishri. "That's incredible!" exclaimed the sadhu. "If we were honored with such a high post, we would expect people to recognize our position of authority and address us accordingly. And we'd remember it." Hearing this Swamishri responded, "Who cares about honor or status. We have come to serve God." Swamishri does not care even a little for name or fame. In his heart, there is only one aim - to serve humanity and God.

Spiritual Guidance

Swamishri answered a couple of questions posed to him during the Bal Shibir in Perry, USA.
Q: We make a lot of mistakes yet you never show any displeasure towards us. How can we avoid making mistakes and with what thought do you forgive us?
A: To err is human. Only God and His realised Sadhu never err. But, we project our faults in them. And to dissolve them, they tolerate our errors and faults. God, out of compassion, loves and talks to us. If God and His realised Sadhu start looking at our faults then we would not be able to sit here. To sustain and elevate us they do not look at our faults. This is their compassion, grace, and patience. If one thinks on these lines then one would stop from erring.
Q: What expectations do you have from us?
A: It was Yogiji Maharaj's dream that children become virtuous and through them our society and nation too. For this you have to avoid eating out. Keep away from bad company. To become ideal means to live a pure life, have honesty, morality, the spirit to help others, dharma and bhakti. You should become virtuous so that it pleases God and your parents. Study well and serve God and the country. 12-8-2000, Perry, USA

Eternal servant
Once, under instructions from Maharaj, Gunatitanand Swami stayed at Vartal in the service of some ailing sadhu. He used to cook according to their individual tastes, would render service to them and even used to wash their quilts. Seeing this, some of the healthy sadhus gave their quilts to Swami for washing. In this way the total went up to about eighteen quilts. Swami washed them in Gomti Lake and was on his way to the mandir carrying them on his shoulders. Water from the quilts and perspiration due to exertion, were running down his body. Precisely at that moment, Maharaj arrived at Hanuman Gate of the mandir after taking lunch at Vasan Suthar's house. Swami stopped and was lost in the darshan of Maharaj's eyes. Maharaj, too, tied with the string of affection, stood there. Their eyes were locked together. "Sadhuram, shall we move now?" Maharaj sought Swami's permission. So Swami withdrew his sight. Then Maharaj arrived in the assembly but appeared restless. Seeing this discomfort, some of the attendants began to fan him, somebody brought a glass of water. But Maharaj said, "I don't want anything, but that sadhu has put a lot of burden on My shoulders. So please take it off." In this way Maharaj showed His oneness with Swami. On hearing this Bhaguji ran and took off the quilts from the shoulders of Swami and placed them near Maharaj. Maharaj called the owners of the quilts. The ailing sadhus came forward and took away their quilts, but the healthy ones felt ashamed and did not come.

Swamishri Prostrates

In 1986, a group of sadhus led by Pujya Mahant Swami embarked on a spiritual tour of USA, Europe and the Far East. After the six month tour, the sadhus went to Bochasan to meet Swamishri.

When the sadhus arrived, Swamishri was busy replying to letters.

No sooner did he see the sadhus enter, Swamishri threw himself flat on the ground to offer his prostrations to them.

As soon as Swamishri completed the first prostration, he prepared to offer another. But one of the sadhus quickly rushed over to Swamishri and stopped him.

Swamishri's striking humility touched the hearts of the sadhus.

18-11-86, Bochasan.

Peace of Mind

On 6 March 2006, a high ranking office-bearer of the Lions Club in Amdavad met Swamishri at the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Shahibaug, Amdavad. Being an active social worker he vented his frustration in resignation before Swamishri, “Despite offering so much services for society I do not have peace of mind!” Swamishri blessed him and advised, “Chant the name of God and pray, and you’ll get peace.” #baps #bapsprasang #pramukhswamimaharaj #mahantswamimaharaj #divine #soul #spiritual #life #joy #love #care #happiness #faith #culture #happy #smile #peace #inspiration #spiritual #satpurush #divine #memories #moment #peaceful #bapsphotos #bapsmedia #jayswaminarayan

Swamishri Bows Down

The month of Shravan (July-August) is considered the holiest month in the Hindu calendar and special fasts are observed to gain extra spiritual merit. In accordance with this tradition a sadhu in Amdavad mandir had taken a special vow to go without food and drink for 12 consecutive days.

When Swamishri arrived in Amdavad, he immediately spotted the sadhu standing near the stairs leading up the mandir.

As Swamishri came towards the flight of stairs, he approached the sadhu and stooped low to touch his feet. (In Indian tradition, it is a gesture of respect and reverence to bow before someone who has just returned from a pilgrimage or someone who is involved in severe austerities, etc.). Swamishri, inspite of being himself an object of reverence to thousands of followers does not feel belittled to bow down before others.

Making a Gem of a Trinket

Mukhi Hirabhai of Bochasan was a descendant of Kashidas Mota. He was a terror not only in Bochasan, but in the whole of the Charotar area. He never hesitated from committing theft, dacoity, murder or any other sin. If anyone complained against him or gave any evidence adverse to him, he was sure to be ruined. He would be exterminated sooner or later. The people of the entire Charotar area trembled at his name. Even the police did not venture to touch him. Hirabhai once sponsored rasoi (dinner) in the mandir. Though Shastriji Maharaj directed all the other sadhus to avail of it, he himself refused to eat. When Hirabhai went to Swamishri to persuade him, Swamishri put to him a condition, "I shall not eat unless you take a vow of good conduct and become a satsangi." Hirabhai looked at Swamishri's eyes and a great change came over him. He decided to give up his sinful and wicked course of conduct and become a satsangi. Soon he accepted the vows from Swamishri. People all over Gujarat were amazed by this feat of Swamishri. They felt that Swamishri, who could make a man like Hirabhai a satsangi (devotee), must indeed be a great soul.

  • Divine Inspiration 'Keep the 'i' Small'

Once, a sadhu gave a notepad and pen to Swamishri and requested, "Swamishri, will you please write in English, 'I bless you'." Swamishri normally writes only in Gujarati but on this occasion he put pen to paper and wrote the words as they were being spelt out by the sadhu. When Swamishri finished writing, he pulled the piece of paper and gave it to the sadhu. Swamishri had written: i BLESS YOU.

The sadhu said to Swamishri, "Swamishri, in English we use capital letters only for the first letter in a sentence or for 'I'. But you have written all the letters in capitals and left the 'I' small!" Swamishri looked at the sadhu and said, "In Satsang, we must always keep the 'i' small." The incident tells us a lot about Swamishri's deep felt emotions. Though he is the President of Shri Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha and has a spiritual following of thousands of people, in his every action he is ego-free. Egoless-ness is the hallmark of a great sadhu.

The Characteristics of Saintliness

Once on his way to the meadows of Sankhadawadar, Gunatitanand Swami stopped at Malia village. He took rest in a mango grove. He saw the mango trees and remarked that they would wither away for want of water. As soon as Pragji Bhakta heard Swami's remarks, he collected two pots and started fetching water from the river that flowed nearby. He started watering the trees. There were some three hundred mango trees and Pragji gave each tree four pots of water. He was drenched to the skin with water and sweat. He came to the Swami with water dripping from his clothes.

Swami, who was on the point of winding up his discourses, invited Pragji to put a question. Gunatitanand wanted to prove that he could be pleased by devout service.
With all his innocence Pragji Bhakta said to Swami, "I know all the worldly crafts but please kindly guide me to saintlliness." The congregation was stunned by the deep scholarly question which contained the essence of all the scriptures, coming from a simple ordinary looking man.

Swami who was equally pleased with Pragji's question replied, "The craft of saintliness is very tough. To look upon insults and honors with equanimity; to bear no ill-will towards anyone; to overcome all the pleasures of the five senses and to realize the truth and remain constantly in communion with Shriji Maharaj is the craft to sainthood. One who has attained this is not in the least away from God. Such a devotee helps millions of people overcome their shortcomings and leads them unto God. He attains power to help others realize God. "The entire assembly of devotees was completely absorbed in the divine speech of the Swami. Manji Thakar and Nathu Patel told the Swami, "Swami, you have quenched our spiritual thirst." #baps #bapsprasang #pramukhswamimaharaj #mahantswamimaharaj #divine #soul #spiritual #life #joy #love #care #happiness #faith #culture #happy #smile #peace #inspiration #spiritual #satpurush #divine #memories #moment #peaceful #bapsphotos #bapsmedia #jayswaminarayan

Go Call Girnar!

Here is another instance of a sudden and odd command. Once, Swami told him, "Pragji, go and call Mount Girnar. The poor fellow has been performing tap (penance) for ages. Let me bless him." Pragji rushed to call Girnar. Some people criticised Pragji for not using discretion. They remarked, "How could a mountain come? You should use discretion in carrying out commands." Pragji Bhakta replied, "It is the duty of a shishya (disciple) to carry out all the commands of his guru without any hesitation.

Only those commands which are against the tenets of religion should not be obeyed. I will go to Girnar and call him. Whether he wants to come or not is upto him." Such was his firm faith in Swami.

Swamishri had just finished his morning session of counseling and was going for lunch from the mandir conference room. Two youths, Sandip and Jaydip from Mumbai, who had come on a concert tour of England, were waiting in the corridor.

Swamishri looked at Sandip and asked him, "Which one of you is older?"
"I am, but Jaydip is bigger than me," replied Sandip. "He is bigger in every respect," added Swamishri. "Yes, that's right," agreed Sandip. "He is famous, I'm small." Hearing this, Swamishri said, "The key to happiness in Satsang is to remain small." Through this incident Swamishri is teaching all of us to remain small and humble in Satsang - for that is the way to please God. The key to happiness in Satsang is service and humility.

Snake Bite
A small monument (deri) had been constructed at the place in Gondal, where the last rites of Aksharbrahma Gunatitanand Swami had been performed. To add to its sanctity, Shastriji Maharaj started erecting a beautiful mandir around the monument. Yogiji Maharaj was stationed there at the time. Every day he used to get up early in the morning at four o'clock and perform the puja of charanarvind (foot-prints carved on stone) of Shriji Maharaj which had been consecrated there. He then performed Mahapuja to the Lord, along with all His devotees.

While the mandir was being built, Yogiji Maharaj and other sadhu used to live in hut-like houses built of mud and bricks. Once at midnight, when Yogiji Maharaj was asleep, a venomous black cobra bit the index finger of his left hand. The sudden rush of pain woke him up. As a result of the poison, the pain quickly spread through his whole body. However Yogiji Maharaj did not complain. He kept on chanting the Swaminarayan mantra.

Some anxious devotees suggested a physician be called. Others proposed various remedies. Meanwhile, Shastriji Maharaj arrived. When he heard of the snake bite he said, "Please bring Yogiji Maharaj here to the Akshar Deri and chant the holy name of Swaminarayan. The effect of the poison will vanish if we summon to our aid the divine power of the Swaminarayan Mahamantra." Immediately, the sadhus lifted Yogiji Maharaj and carried him to the Akshar Deri and started chanting the holy name of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. After exactly twelve hours, the effect of the poison subsided. Yogiji Maharaj opened his eyes and bowed to Shastriji Maharaj. Just then a government doctor arrived. He was amazed to see that the effect of the poison had been nullified by chanting the Swaminarayan mantra. He fell at the feet of Shastriji Maharaj. The king of Gondal and his officers were also surprised at the divine power of the Akshar Deri and the Swaminarayan mantra. They were convinced that it was a highly sanctified place.

  • Divine Inspiration 'Look Here!' During the course of his blessings, Swamishri noticed that one of the boys was looking sideways and his attention was gradually drifting away. Swamishri suddenly called out, "Look here!" The inattentive child was caught out and he jumped on his feet spontaneously. "You can sit down," said Swamishri. "Tell me, what did you just sing?" Swamishri asked.
"There's no other sadhu like you," replied the child.
"Then why were you looking elsewhere," asked Swamishri.
"Sorry, Bapa, I made a mistake." Swamishri was pleased with the child and blessed him.

All of us make mistakes in our daily lives. But no mistake is greater than the mistake of forgetting God and His holy Sadhu in our daily lives.

It seems that in that assembly Swamishri also reminded the child in each one of us to, "Look here!" #baps #bapsprasang #pramukhswamimaharaj #mahantswamimaharaj #divine #soul #spiritual #life #joy #love #care #happiness #faith #culture #happy #smile #peace #inspiration #spiritual #satpurush #divine #memories #moment #peaceful #bapsphotos #bapsmedia #jayswaminarayan

Eminent Orator

The recitation of Satsangijivan was sponsored by Harilal Sheth, the grandson of Shivlal Sheth. Four puranis (reciters) were appointed to give the discourses in turn. Yagnapurushdasji's turn was last. All the devotees were immensely pleased to witness the unique style of his discourse, his subtle knowledge of Vachanamrut and the methodology adopted by him in expounding the subject with the authority of other scriptures and support of appropriate illustrations. The next day when someone went to call for the Sheth to attend the discourse, the latter replied, "Please inform me when it is Yagnapurushdasji's turn to recite the katha." The sadhus got envious on hearing this reply. On the last day a question arose as to which of the reciters should be honored first. The Sheth directed in clear words, "He should be honored first whose recitation has been the most satisfactory. Everyone in the assembly has been pleased with Shastri Yagnapurushdasji's recitations. Hence he should be honored first." This augmented the indignation of the sadhus.

With the evil intention of slighting Yagnapurushdasji, Sadhu Raghuvircharandas said, "Today one who has stooped so low as to accept a tailor and a cobbler as his gurus is being honored in this assembly as a very respectable person!'' Hearing this, Yagnapurushdasji roared like a lion, "The right to be a guru does not vest solely in those who wear the saffron. If you are going to discriminate against Pragji Bhakta and Jaga Bhakta, who have been graced by Gunatitanand Swami and who have attained the Brahmic consciousness, merely on the ground of caste, Maharaj will not excuse you." With these words he sat down.

The elderly sadhus rebuked Raghuvircharandas. Harilal Sheth went forward for the pujan (honoring) of Yagnapurushdasji, but the latter courteously declined, and allowed the aged sadhu Haridas Swami to be honored first and himself to be honored last.

  • Divine Inspiration 'An Hour is Better than Births'

After a lengthy journey of more than three hours by car, Swamishri arrived from Hartlepool (North-East England) to Preston. A gathering of devotees had been waiting eagerly at the mandir to receive Swamishri and his entourage.

As Swamishri got out of the car, a devotee said, "Swamishri, we have been waiting for over an hour for you." Swamishri's response was instant, "A one hour wait is still better than waiting for many births."
We sometimes forget how fortunate we are to have the contact of a God-communion sadhu. From time to time, Swamishri reminds us of the good fortune that we are blessed with.

Pilgrimage at the Feet of Gunatitanand Swami

Once, after the festival of Annakut Pragji Bhakta was washing the utensils. There was a pit of dirty water. Gunatitanand Swami came there and stood there watching Pragji at work. He put his foot on the edge of the pit. The dirty water touched his toes. At that time Swami asked Pragji, "Where can one find all the sixty-eight places of pilgrimage?" Pragji Bhakta understood the deeper meaning of Swami's words and directly jumped into the pit of dirty water. It was a spiritual bath for him. He knew that all the sixty-eight holy places lay in that pit of dirty water because Swami's toes were dipped into it. For some time Swami watched his devotee taking the holy bath in the dirty pit, then he said, "Pragji, come out, go and wash yourself with clean water." Such was the devotion of Pragji Bhakta.

Service of ill Sadhus

Once Shriji Maharaj arrived at Kariyani from Gadhada. From here Maharaj wanted to go to Vartal for the festival of Ram Navmi. But here nineteen sadhus were taken ill. So Maharaj said, "I'll give the fruit and benefit of one hundred festival to the person who serves these ailing sadhus." But nobody was prepared to leave Maharaj and serve the ailing sadhus. Gunatitanand Swami knew Maharaj's desire and duly volunteered. Maharaj was very happy and said, "Kudos to this sadhu. He did not let me down." Maharaj then left for Vartal. Swami served the ailing sadhus with enthusiasm. By the grace of Maharaj all the sadhus recovered fully. Moreover, there was still a few days before the festival, so Swami expressed his desire to go. All the sadhus gave their consent willingly and requested Swami to embrace Maharaj on their behalf. Swami reached Vartal, remembering Maharaj. Maharaj was very happy to see Swami who had come after serving the ailing sadhus and thereby pleasing Him. Maharaj embraced Swami nineteen times. #baps #bapsprasang #pramukhswamimaharaj #mahantswamimaharaj #divine #soul #spiritual #life #joy #love #care #happiness #faith #culture #happy #smile #peace #inspiration #spiritual #satpurush #divine #memories #moment #peaceful #bapsphotos #bapsmedia #jayswaminarayan

Looking at a youth named Tarun, Swamishri said, "You reached here before us because you are familiar with the roads in London." Tarun took this opportunity to tell Swamishri, "I may be familiar with London but you are the knower of millions of universes." Swamishri laughed and said, "Millions of universes yes, but in London, even I need a guide!" Sometimes Swamishri reveals his true identity to us like a flash in the pan. He mixes so freely and readily with us that we seldom realize his true glory.

Devotion Par Excellence

Yogiji Maharaj had the small murti of Shri Harikrishna Maharaj (small metallic murti of Shriji Maharaj, formerly worshipped by Gunatitanand Swami). The time to offer water to Shri Harikrishna Maharaj was fast approaching but there was no water anywhere. Yogiji Maharaj became worried and upset. "My Lord must be very thirsty. What shall I do?" he said to himself.

It was six in the evening when they came to a river. Yogiji Maharaj asked the cart-driver to stop by the river side. He took the murti of Shri Harikrishna Maharaj, bathed it in the river water and offered it filtered water to drink. Yogiji Maharaj was still not fully satisfied. He prostrated and prayed repeatedly before the murti, "Oh Maharaj, please forgive me. Today, I have failed to give You water on time. Please forgive me." On hearing this, Swami Nirgundasji who was standing nearby casually said, "It wasn't your fault that we couldn't get any water on the way. You are not to blame." Still, Yogiji Maharaj kept bowing to the murti repeatedly and prayed for forgiveness. Words fail to describe the full measure of his dedication, devotion and humility. We should also cultivate these same virtues.

Akshar Deri is Here

At the end of an evening assembly, Swamishri was blessing the devotees. A youth with shoulder-length hair came to Swamishri. "Why have you kept long hair?" inquired Swamishri. "Fashion," the youth replied. Swamishri held the youth's wrist and drew him closer. "Understand one thing, young man," Swamishri said lovingly, "if we begin wearing the fads and fashions of this country, we will gradually drift away from the values taught in the Satsang. As Yogi Bapa's youth one has to set a good example for others to follow. It doesn't suit us to keep long hair."
The youth admitted his mistake and said, "I take a vow to get it cut after I have darshan of the Akshar Deri in Gondal (India)." Hearing the youth's vow, said, "But the Akshar Deri is right here before you. Cut your hair right away." The youth agreed to change his ways quickly.

We all know that the Akshar Deri is the wish-fulfilling and peace-giving shrine dedicated to Gunatitanand swami.

But Swamishri is the living embodiment of Akshar Deri because he too can give us peace and help us fulfil our wishes through his blessings. The scriptures also state that all the pilgrimage places, holy rivers and sacred mountains culminate in the God-communion sadhu.

The Enlightened Have Innumerable Eyes

Yagnapurushdasji went to Surat from Vartal and engaged himself in the service of his guru and the mandir. In the month of Fagun of the same year, a festival was organized in Surat to mark the installation of the murti of Ghanshyam Maharaj. Hence Acharya Maharaj, sadhus and the devotees from various places had arrived in Surat. Pragji Bhakta had also come from Mahuva on this occasion. Spiritual discourses by Pragji Bhakta were going on till late night and sadhus and devotees listened to him with rapt attention. Yagnapurushdas used to go to the seats of all the sadhus and listen to them. Seeing a large assembly in front of Pragji Bhakta, he also went to his seat for hearing his discourses.

He found his discourse to be distinct from other discourses. While giving the discourses, Pragji Bhakta, a tailor by trade, simultaneously carried on his work of stitching. And the listeners, too, listened to him with rapt attention. Nobody moved from his seat. Everyone had joy writ on their faces. Yagnapurushdasji was surprised to see this. He felt Pragji Bhakta to be an extraordinary person, for he was talking and giving discourses while looking at all the people in the gathering and stitching a cloth at the same time. How was he able to do all these activities at the same time? Pragji Bhakta immediately read Yagnapurushdasji's mind and said, "Sadhuram (good sadhu)! Every creature has two eyes, the learned have three, the religious have seven but the gnani (enlightened) has innumerable eyes. Hence, I can see with my fingers, I can see with my back, in fact I can see everywhere." #baps #bapsprasang #pramukhswamimaharaj #mahantswamimaharaj #divine #soul #spiritual #life #joy #love #care #happiness #faith #culture #happy #smile #peace #inspiration #spiritual #satpurush #divine #memories #moment #peaceful #bapsphotos #bapsmedia #jayswaminarayan

Service By Intuition

A sadhu was reading aloud before Swamishri an article entitled "Yogiji Maharaj Bhavna Bheru" (Yogiji Maharaj - a companion in life) from the Sanstha's Gujarati monthly "Swaminarayan

Prakash." Swamishri looked at a youth named Mitesh, who was sitting at the back of the room, and asked, "Do you know what 'Bheru' means?" Mitesh, born and brought up in England, knew very little Gujarati, so he replied, "No, I don't know what it means." A sadhu explained, "It means friend and companion." Hearing this, Swamishri added, "Not just a companion but a lifelong companion." We all have friends. But our friends like us less when they see our flaws. They tend to drift away. But in Swamishri, we have a unique friend. Despite our drawbacks, he still loves us and forgives us. He has promised to stand by us and guide us all the way, all the time.

He is our lifelong companion.

Control Of Instincts

In the Samvat Year 1869, there was a severe drought in Kathiawad. In order to lessen the consequent burden, Maharaj sent Muktanand Swami to Surat with a group of two hundred sadhus. Gunatitanand Swami was also included in this group. Somebody had tied a monkey in the ruins just opposite the lodging of the sadhu. Everybody's attention was naturally drawn towards that monkey due to its incessant movements.

One night, whilst giving a discourse, Muktanand Swami addressed all the sadhu, "Look, how vagrant are our senses! They always beguile us. There is no need for us to look there, but there is hardly anyone among us who has not seen that monkey. If there is anybody, please stand up." Everyone was astonished when they listened to Muktanand Swami. Only Gunatitanand Swami stood up with folded hands from amongst the two hundred sadhus.

Seeing this, Muktanand Swami was also surprised and he said, "Oh! You are the only one amongst this group who could control his instincts. Even I once looked at that monkey." But Swami could do it because he constantly looked inward and there was nothing in his heart, except the murti of Maharaj. Muktanand Swami was all praise for this brahmic state of Swami.

If there is anybody, please stand up." Flame of Knowledge

In 1990, the climax of Swamishri's four month stay in UK were the celebrations of the Diwali and Annakut Festival in London.

After the festivities, Swamishri sat down for his lunch in the kitchen. The youths had decorated the kitchen with lighted candles and lamps ('divas'). As Swamishri was eating, one of the youths sang a prayer in Gujarati and said, "Swamishri we have lit this room with candles and lamps. Now please help us to illuminate our hearts with your light." Swamishri was pleased with the youth's prayer and said, "The flame of knowledge (gnan) is already lit within your heart. Now you have to ensure it doesn't blow out." "But how do we know whether the flame is still glowing?" asked one of the youths.

Swamishri stopped eating and explained, "The flame of knowledge is said to be glowing if you can remain steady in Satsang through times of tears and laughter, honor and insult. If we keep this flame aglow at all times we will experience the bliss of God." Swamishri is an illuminated personality because the flame of knowledge is constantly glowing within his heart. He is in constant communion with God.

A Real Sadhu

The sadhu visited one village after another to propagate satsang. They cared not whether it was day or night. Wherever they went, they collected flour and cooked their meals from whatever they managed to get.

Once the sadhus had halted at a village called Sankarda. Every morning, they would go round the village to beg foodstuff (bhiksha). Yogiji Maharaj, accompanied by the blind sadhu Bhagwatswarupdasji, would also go around to beg food. Holding one of his hands, he led Bhagwatswarupdasji along the road. A bag hung from Yogij Maharaj's other shoulder. When anybody offered flour, grain, etc., he would open his bag. As he walked, he kept searching the road so that no stone or thorn or pit could get in the way of Bhagwatswarupdasji. After the morning round was over, he cooked whatever alms they had received. He first devoutly offered the food to the Lord. Then, after serving everybody else, he would finally sit down to have his meal.

Karsansang Bapu of Adval often saw Yogiji Maharaj leading the blind and aged sadhu Bhagwatswarupdasji while going round for alms. One day, he saw the barefooted Yogiji Maharaj begging for alms in the scorching heat of summer. He felt pity for him. "Yogiji Maharaj", he asked, "why don't you take a younger sadhu with you? How difficult it must be with such an aged sadhu to go about asking for bhiksha!" Yogiji Maharaj, smiling, replied quietly, "Bapu, it is my good fortune to have such an aged sadhu with me. I am extremely fortunate to learn from a revered old sadhu! While moving about with him I get the benefit of his vast knowledge, experience and wisdom. I also get the benefit of serving the mandir by bringing in bhiksha." Karsansang Bapu could not but admire the good sense and kindliness of Yogiji Maharaj. He bowed to him silently as a token of respect.

  • Divine Inspiration 'If Only One has Faith'

After lunch, a group of devotees and youths were in Swamishri's room for the afternoon discourse. One of the youths said, "Swamishri, please show us Akshardham." Before Swamishri could say anything a devotee said, "But Akshardham is sitting before your very eyes. Everything is here if only one has faith." Swamishri frequently says, "We cannot see the Lord in Akshardham and we fail to realize the true greatness of the form of God that is sitting, walking, talking and eating before us."
So what do we do?

It requires of us to keep faith in the form of God that is before us. Through such firm faith and the divine grace of a God-communion Sadhu we will be blessed with boundless bliss.

Schooling

Dungar Bhakta (Shastriji Maharaj) studied at the village school under Gangaram Mehtaji in Samvat year 1930. His memory was very sharp and his intelligence was high which enabled him to memorise all the lessons immediately. The teacher too became very fond of him and began to give more and more attention to him. Dungar Bhakta, of course, was determined to stand first in his studies, and if he became a sadhu he would attain the first rank in that order as well. Thus, he learnt a lot in a short time. Besides learning in school, he began to study all the scriptures of the Satsang (Fellowship) and also the Shrimad Bhagvat from the sadhus visiting the Mahelav mandir. Even at the tender age of nine, whenever there was no sadhu available in the mandir, it was he who gave discourses to the devout gathering. Everyone listened to him spell-bound. All the residents of Mahelav showered affection on him because of such virtues.

  • Bhajan - The Means to Fearlessness

An aspirant’s son was plagued by a vision of a scary shadow every night. On asking Swamishri he replied, “Chant Swaminarayan. Your fear will disappear.”
“But the shadow intimidates me and tells me to remove the murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan from the ghar mandir (home mandir),” the distraught youth informed.
Swamishri pacified him and advised, “It is all a figment of your imagination. There is nothing like that. Instead, by chanting Swaminarayan, your fear will go away. So do more bhajan.
Don’t worry. Everything will turn out well.”
Then Swamishri explained the power of the Swaminarayan mantra

New-Found Peace

The evening assembly had an eminent audience of national and state level professionals and dignitaries. After Swamishri's blessings, Dr. Dilip Naiyar, Head of an ICU at Manipal Hospital was a changed person. For several months, the heavy grinding responsibilities of his medical duties had robbed him of mental peace. Dr. Naiyar was on the brink of a nervous breakdown. He told Dr. Akhileshwaran, a satsangi friend, that one of these days he would run away. And he did take a break. The day he returned Dr. Akhileshwaran informed him of Swamishri's arrival in Bangalore. Dr. Naiyar came to the evening assembly and after listening to Swamishri's blessings he experienced a new breeze of life. He said he had not understood a single world, but the moment Swamishri began his blessings, he felt his tension melt away. He felt unburdened of his worries. "Now I feel totally at peace. It was a different and new experience." #bapsprasang #pramukhswamimaharaj #mahantswamimaharaj #divine #soul #spiritual #life #joy #love #care #happiness #smile #faith #peace #inspiration #spirituality #divine #happy #inspirational #jayswaminarayan

  • Beyond All Barriers

One of the sadhus asked Swamishri, 'Yogiji Maharaj preferred to stay in Gondal more than any other place. Do you have a favorite place where you like to stay more?' 'A God-communion Sadhu is beyond boundaries and borders. It seems to our mind that Yogiji Maharaj liked one place more than another. But this is due to the limitations of our human mind. In reality, a God-realized Sadhu is here, there and everywhere.
In this small phrase Swamishri highlighted the salient feature of a God-communion Sadhu. He seems free in the sense that he never sees the natural order frustrating. This being so, nothing binds him or shakes him. Nothing disrupts his peace of mind. He feels no lack, no misery, no fear and finds no sense for strife or grief. He is always in good spirits, agreeable and joyful. It is we who have likes and dislikes, and when they are not satisfied, we are disturbed.

  • Obedient Pragji Bhakta

At times Gunatitanand Swami used to test Pragji Bhakta. Once Swami told him, "Pragji, mortar is to be prepared. Fetch me two hundred spades and five hundred baskets." Pragji went to the mandir and returned with some spades and baskets which he could collect. But he never argued with the Swami. He never challenged him as to where he was expected to bring so many spades and baskets from. He knew that the mandir did not possess spades and baskets in such a big number. He knew that Gunatitanand Swami was omniscient. Therefore, it was his duty to act according to his desire, keeping firm faith in him.

  • Jinabhai in Meditation

There is a confluence of three rivers on the outskirts of Dhari. The place of confluence is known as Triveni Sangam, and the resulting river is called the river Shetrunji. The Shetrunji narrows on reaching a bridge, and shrinks to the size of a small rivulet under the bridge. The inhabitants of Dhari call it 'Patalio Zaro'. Exactly at this spot near the bridge, Jinabhai used to have his daily bath in the morning. He would wear clean clothes after his bath, and then sit in an upright posture and perform meditation for hours together. He meditated upon the divine form of Shriji Maharaj. To many who saw Jinabhai seated in meditation at such a lonely place, it seemed as if Dhruv himself was meditating! They invariably stood and watched the young Jina steeped in meditation.
Sometimes, friends of Jinabhai would come to have their bath at 'Patalio Zaro'. They were amazed to find Jinabhai rapt in meditation. They would wait for him till he came out of his meditation. And then they would always enquire, "What were you doing?" And Jinabhai would reply, "I try to remember God. Will you join me? I will teach you the art of meditation."
From his childhood Jinabhai never failed to do his meditation every morning. He advised everybody to start their morning work only after remembering Shriji Maharaj.

  • Craving for Darshan

The glory of great people lies in their very living. The divine virtues of Gunatitanand Swami, described by Shriji Maharaj, revealed themselves on many an occasion. The year was Samvat 1869. Light showers of rain were falling from the sky on that dark night. The sky was covered with clouds and was illuminated with intermittent thunderbolts. All the sadhus had retired to sleep after a session with Maharaj, in which they had enjoyed the company and the darshan of Maharaj. Then Maharaj went to the palace to talk to the devotees.

It was at that time that Gunatitanand Swami was standing under some shade beside the wall, half-drenched, trying to save himself from the rain, in order to have the glimpse of Maharaj's darshan. Meanwhile Muktanand Swami came out of his room for some work and saw somebody standing there. So he enquired as to who it was. Swami modestly replied, "It is me, Nirgunanand, I am standing here with a view to have the darshan of Maharaj when He returns from the palace after the spiritual discourse." Muktanand Swami was surprised when he saw Swami craving for the darshan. He thought to himself, "Oh! Look at his faith, he cares neither for his body nor for sleep. Although the murti of Maharaj is constantly in his heart, he craves so much for His darshan." Muktanand Swami then went into his room but Swami stood there till late in the night, shivering in a half-drenched condition. When Maharaj returned, Swami had a glimpse in the light of a thunderbolt. Thereafter, he went outside the village to sleep under the shade of a tree on the banks of the river Ghela.

How to Be Happy

Question: What if someone doesn't accept what you say, yet he still stands in front of you for darshan. What do you feel when you see him?

Swamishri: If he doesn't accept it or understand it, then what can we do? If he is not satisfied today, how will he be satisfied tomorrow? Sooner or later he will realize his ignorance. Our faults can hinder us anytime, anywhere. We will only ever be happy if we remove our faults. As for him, he will realize his faults in his own time, but I never develop a dislike for him.

The Correct Address

In 1982, during Swamishri's Satsang Tour abroad, I had the duty of answering Swamishri's mail and also writing the report of his vicharan.
Once, in London, Swamishri wrote a confidential letter to Rameshbhai Hathibhai Patel. Handing it to me to post, he asked, "Do you know the address?" Confidently, I said, "Yes," thinking that it must be in the diary. But when I checked, I couldn't find it. The devotee was well known, so I asked Viveksagar Swami, Narayancharan Swami and others if they knew the address. But no one knew exactly. Eventually we came up with the address, "Patel Traders, Anand." I labeled the envelope accordingly and passed it on, with other letters, to Arunkumar to post.
That night, as Swamishri prepared to rest, he asked, "What address did you write?" Pleased that I had found a solution to the task, I told him the whole story. But Swamishri was not happy, he said, "If you didn't know, you should have asked me. The letter was to be posted to his home address." Then Swamishri gave his complete home address, which none of the other sadhus knew.

Afterwards, I phoned Arunkumar to correct the address on the envelope. But the thing that amazed me was that how many addresses like this does Swamishri remember!
