  • MARCELO ALCAIDE / MUTATION, RIPPLE EFFECT / GLOBAL MENTAL HEALTH AND NEUROSCIENCE: DIFFERENT SYNERGIES MIGHT BE NEEDED (EXCERPT)
___________________

#049 The field of neuroscience should look elsewhere for synergies if they are to make tangible improvements to the wellbeing of the world. Although emotions such as sadness and worry are experienced globally, to extrapolate from this and conclude that diagnostic systems from developed countries, such as the ICD, the DSM, and the Research Domain Criteria project by the US National Institute of Mental Health, can be appropriately applied on a global scale is flawed logic and might produce serious consequences.

Professor and Chair of the Dept of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Cape Town Dan J. Stein and his colleagues state that the DSM-5 “encourages a cultural formulation,” but seem not to realise that a DSM-based cultural formulation is still a doctrine from developed countries that might be imposed in a neo-colonial way onto lower-income countries to usurp their beliefs and explanations.

___________________ “A word that can define the passing of diseases, and the passing of power through machinery. Both are an act of passing. Humans creating machines that create diseases that create machines to study them to better understand how to better control them, to control the passing of them. Microscopes are machines that humans created that pass off such information. This is my throat under such a machine. Millions Of veins, my mycelial network of blood cells. On a constant mission to transmit blood throughout my body.”

#026 Eight photographs from Matthew Lutz Kinoy. “These are photographs of the doors in the studio. Some open, some closed. One opening on northern Italy lifted from a painting by Francesco Guardi, extracted from a castle near Udine. Another opens on a Burle Marx designed public plaza in Rio de Janeiro with a white orchid string-fastened to a tree. There is a painting of the patron saint of Palermo receiving a crown of flowers from an angel. The rest of the doors open onto the room itself, one after another.”

  • “La Paura Mangia L’Anima" (Italian for Fear Eats the Soul) is an installation by Rirkrit Tiravanija, installed on the facade of a former 16th century church of San Paolo Converso currently the art exhibition space of Fondazione Converso in Milan.
It is the first flag of a series of six commissioned to the widely influential Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, and inspired by the movie “Ali: Fear Eats the Soul” by Rainer Werner Fassbinder that criticizes the racism and class struggle in Germany throughout 1970s. The movie feels more relevant today more than 1970s!
The art work comes timely at the moment of crisis in our contemporary history, as after nearly two decades of Islamophobia and bloodshed throughout Middle East, now a new wave of hatred is being spread by blaming the pandemic on China and Chinese people by those who will benefit financially. A hight price that will be paid with blood of civilians and making the vulnerable parts of our global society even more vulnerable.
This fantastic art installation reminds us how art that is installed in public & urban spaces can reach wider audience and send them a strong message of solidarity is vital today more than ever.

#033 Independent curator, editor and writer Kiki Mazzuchelli (@kmazzucchelli) shares a photograph of actresses Eva Harms and Olga Walewska walking on Flávio de Carvalho's Amazon expedition “Experience n.4”, held in 1958. “This photograph shows the two actresses recruited by Carvalho - Eva Harms and Olga Walewska - wearing mosquito net hats during the expedition. I came across this picture while doing research for the Flávio de Carvalho exhibitions I organised last year in London and São Paulo, and thought there was something very appealing about the image of these two veiled women holding hands against the backdrop of the Amazonian jungle.

Looking back at it today, I am reminded of one of Flávio de Carvalho’s main conclusions drawn from his extensive research on the evolution of fashion: “Fashion – as a product of the ‘magic of history’ – announces future events.””

The video is by Grekaandfriends in collaboration with Goshka Macuga. “Dogs have become the unfortunate protagonists of the Covid-19 chain of contagion. Although it is believed that the virus originates in bats, the infectious agent has apparently been passed through an intermediate animal, and then hopped from the animal to humans. Dogs have been on the list of potential candidates, yet the corpus delicti is still unknown. Humans, in the meantime, toy with the laws of the planet, placing themselves above other species, perhaps forgetting to reevaluate their presence. While the mystery remains unsolved we may take this dog as an oracle, which will lead us through the dark times, and help us unmask 'the beast’.” ___________________

The video ironically comments on the Roman architectural and historical heritage in light of Object Oriented Ontology while Kiesler’s text distinguishes between the building techniques of nature and of man (biotechniques), and observes the “needs” which define functionalism as always evolving.

The two works presented together call upon a suspension of disbelief in the existing systems that govern nature and artifice, and echo Kiesler’s case that biotechnology can eliminate the arbitrary divisions of architecture into: Art, Technology and Economy, and make architecture a socially constructive factor in man’s daily activities.

  • Fondazione Converso presents an ongoing digital initiative titled “The Task of the Translator.” This project invites Converso’s community to consider the prominent lexicon associated with Covid-19 and aims to translate these pervasive words and phrases—such as social distancing, herd immunity, and ripple effect—into a meditative study on contemporary visual culture. Through its digital channels @fondazioneconverso is publishing photo, video, and poetry from contributors in order to cultivate and collage the different perspectives that comprise a global portrait of the pandemic and its vast implications. The switches portray hands so as to create a misleading haptic touch. It’s home, but it’s missing a touch.

  • From January 23 to February 15 2020, Converso presents «The End», a solo exhibition by London-based artist Michael Dean invited by Julie Boukobza.
For the occasion a vynil record in a limited edition of 300 copies will be released by NERO Editions.
The exhibition takes its title from a new work written by M. Dean. «The End», a broken conversation of attempted red echo synchrony between two voices, written in response to the two-room former church, and its histrionic architecture divided and united by a semi-circle geometry of heaven for singing and listening.

  • Fear Eats the Soul
Ph: Rirkrit Tiravanija, La Paura Mangia L’Anima, 2020, single-sided nylon applique on nylon base

This is a (great) cultural and socio-political propaganda project in Milan. Fondazione Converso has started six-part flag series by New York-based artist Rirkrit Tiravanija (b. Buenos Aires, 1961) on the front-facing facade of the Church of San Paolo Converso, in Milan. The public initiative, which will change over every two months throughout 2020, presents text and image.
This first one: La Paura Mangia L’Anima (“Fear Eats the Soul”) comes from Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s cult movie, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, which resonates today for its poignant questioning of racism and class struggle throughout Germany in the 1970s. Made especially for Converso, Tiravanija’s first flag in this series comes at a timely moment in global history, when museums and cultural institutions are experiencing forced closures across Northern Italy as a precautionary health measure related to the widespread epidemic known as Coronavirus.
The flag La Paura Mangia L’Anima will be on view till 2nd May
