  • Finicky Eaters (Leopard Gecko Edition)

Our Tip of the Week idea has been brought to you by @zaraszoo ! Head on over to her page and check out her awesome animals !

As Leopard Gecko Breeders/Owners, we will all eventually run into the problem of Leopard Geckos not accepting food. Naturally, they tend to go off of food during the winter and can go for a couple months successively, this is normal.

However, if your Leopard Gecko is being picky with its food and accepting one insect over another, it can be a bit tricky to get it onto a mealworm diet.

For baby leopard geckos:
We use the @ron_tremper technique, pinching the mealworm until a bit of “mealworm juice” is seen, then we dab it onto the baby leopard geckos lips. This allows the baby to have the taste and scent of the mealworm imprinted on its jacobsons gland. Essentially it allows the baby to understand that this is a viable food source. After this, our babies are eating mealworms from their bowls 9/10 times (some need further conditioning)

For adult leopard geckos:
The same trick above can be used although it may fail. If you’re adult leo’s only like one type of insect, cut that insect out of its diet and re-introduce mealworms in its food bowl again and leave it be for around two weeks. Your leopard gecko should eventually find the mealworms as a new source of food and will start accepting them again.

These techniques have been proven to work aside from force feeding (which we don’t recommend at all). If your leopard gecko won’t eat at all and you’ve tried everything, check the time of year it is. If you have further suspicion, bring it to a veterinarian.

If you feel the need to force feed, do not do it. There are other alternatives to prying its mouth open and jamming a worm inside. One of those alternatives is to use @flukerfarms Repta Boost, mixed in a paste and dabbed onto its lips (babies & adults)

Never force a geckos mouth open as they are fragile (or any animal for that matter)

  • Zauneidechse

I discovered this male lizard on the vineyards near Stuttgart. Unfortunately, it is on the list of endangered species and you can find it less and less. What luck that I could get so close to this shy lizard. 😊

📍They have poisonous saliva and can be dangerous — but the World Animal Foundation estimates there are only about 6,000 left in the wild, all concentrated in Indonesia's Komodo National Park!!🦎🦎

  • The Four-toed worm lizard (Bipes canaliculatus) must be one of the weirdest lizards in the world. Long, slender and pink like a worm. Blind with only light receptors. They live a burrowing live and have 2 tiny, but powerful, feet with which they can dig like a mole. These amazing animals are endemic to Mexico. #worm #wormlizard #bipes #weird #strangerthings #lizard #lizards #lizardsofinstagram #pink #alien #mexico #mexican #wildlife #reptile #reptiles #reptilesofinstagram
