As much mesmerizing palms can be, they are the main reason for deforestation and habitat loss for all the wildlife. Please, consider avoiding palm oil in your daily beauty routines as well as in your groceries. By becoming conscious consumers we are making a big impact on our environment and making a difference in the lives of elephants, orangutans, rhinos, and tigers who are highly endangered and on a verge of extinction. 🐘🐒🦏🐅 #lovetheleuser #tangkahanecotourism #tangkahan #palmoilplantation #notopalmoil #wildlife #environment #sumatra

  • @haka_sumatra protects the Leuser Ecosystem which is the last place on earth where tigers, rhinos, elephants and orangutans coexist in the wild. The Leuser Ecosystem is acts as a life-support system for approximately four million people in Aceh 🌳🦧🐘🦏🐅⁣
⁣
With COVID -19 most of the programs are facing challenges and sadly environmental destruction is still going on. HAkA collaborates with @leuserconservationforum who are on the frontlines protecting the Leuser Ecosystem and other protected habitats in Aceh from illegal activities. ⁣
⁣
The goal with @coachingforcause is to support this amazing organization to protect the Leuser Ecosystem. There are still has two eco-webinars for you to sign up for those ticket sales will be going towards the HaKA fundraiser. Donations are invited whether you wish to attend the webinars or not. We also have some exciting updates coming too soon, more ways for you to get involved. ⁣
⁣
And if you want to specifically support marine conservation take a look over at @biorockindonesia - Coaching for Cause is a community partner for the Corals Are Our Future Online Festival - learning about coral reef restoration and healthy coral creates a healthy community. It’s going to be great.⁣
⁣
This is not being shared by way of detracting from the leading conversation online right now, and as I highlighted yesterday in the stories all this is an 'and’ an addition - a ‘read up, wise up, act up, here too’ - The work of HakA helps to protect the ecosystem for those who depend directly it for ecosystem services, many of whom are indigenous communities, rural communities and those vulnerable to the impacts of climate change now. We all depend on the environmental services of Leuser indirectly. Just as BioRock Coral Reef Restoration works to support the ecosystems that coastal communities depend upon too. ⁣
⁣
It’s all linked, no climate justice with no social justice. No social justice without implementation of environmental and climate protections. Do what you can. We can do more than we think and can contribute in so many different and impactful ways. ⁣

  • From Asia to Africa: Will pangolins go extinct in our lifetime?
We talk to conservationists to understand the plight of pangolins, the most trafficked mammals in the world.
Words by Cathy Lai
@damien_mander Damien Mander, a military-trained sniper from Australia who founded Akashinga in 2017, says the group has handled over 50 pangolin-related poaching arrests in Zimbabwe since the beginning of last year. “The pangolins we intercept are mostly for the local supply [sold for bushmeat and traditional medicine]. We also have a huge Asian community here,” says the soldier-turned-environmental activist, adding that some pangolin scales end up in shipments to Asia where they are purchased for traditional medicine. @paulhiltonphoto Paul Hilton, a photojournalist and independent wildlife crime consultant, has been following illicit trades around the world for years. He blames corruption for enabling the black market to exist. “Corruption in many Southeast Asian countries runs right from the top all the way down,” he says. “[Smugglers] basically pay off the Customs and government officials, so products can move across borders.” For the full story, link in my bio #stopwildlifecrime #banthesnare #lovetheleuser #earthtreeimages #earthtreecollective #photographersagainstwildlifecrime #outtherewithpaulhilton

Upravo zato , u Tangkahanu nema ljudsko slonovskih konflikata i divlja krda ostaju potpuno sigurna 🌳🐘♥️

  • Today is #internationabiodiveristy day!
Reposted from @orangutaninformationcentre Today is #internationalbiodiversityday2020 bringing the theme of "our solution are in nature". Amid the on going out break of pandemic covid 19, today reminds us that #hope, #solidarity and the importance of working together at all levels to build a future of life in #harmony with #nature. As human, we depend completely on #water, #food #medicine, shelter and so much more from the healthy #ecosystem. Up to now, OIC has been doing variety of programme and approach as ways to preserve and protect our precious biodiversity. Thus, let's build back our new normal in harmony with nature as the best way to recover from this pandemic. "Remember that nature doesn't need us but we as human need nature" emphasize Fransisca, director of OIC. Keep supporting us, #orangutansguardian.

  • We're grateful for the ongoing support of Partnerships for Protection, founded by these two incredible Australian business women, Leila and Kim. They founded this organisation as a means for individuals and businesses to support grassroots conservation programmes in North Sumatra. Partnerships for Protection chooses programmes that work at a community level to try and help preserve the Leuser Ecosystem. We've had support from these generous ladies for the past two years and wanted to acknowledge their untiring dedication to helping protect wild places like the Leuser Ecosystem and helping the communities that live alongside it. At a time when financial support is hard to come by, we so appreciate your continued support. Thank you @p4protect from all of us!

  • Endangered Species Day 🌱🌍🐘⁣
⁣
Today I want to dedicate my #DigitalStrike and focus of my Endangered Species Day post to the critically endangered species of the Leuser Ecosystem. The Leuser Ecosystem is the last place on earth where orangutan, rhino, elephants and tigers co-exist in the wild. Deforestation, habitat fragmentation and poaching all endanger the already fragile populations the Leuser Ecosystem supports. These four species are keystone species meaning their presence within the ecosystem plays a huge role in the functionality of the ecosystem as a whole. ⁣
⁣
Endangered species are in dire need of collective human help and targeted conservation of these species is imperative, but should not be focused on so specifically that we forget to look at the entire ecosystems as a whole. We have to preserve whole ecosystems. We are on the way to losing these endangered species in the next ten years. It's important to remember that there will still be orangutan and elephants in ten years time but their ecosystem and their populations may not be recoverable. ⁣
⁣
There is still time and it is with thanks to the untiring efforts of organisations like @haka_sumatra and so many others I could write about for days, that we have reason for hope, there is a chance of an ecosystem recovery.⁣
⁣
Take some time today to learn how you can support the preservation of endangered species and their ecosystems. Learn about the efforts of local and indigenous communities to preserve those ecosystems, learn about legislation that's either supporting or damaging those ecosystems 🌍🌱⁣
⁣
Take some time to learn about endangered species that get less attention but are equally important to our world; birds like the Simeulue Hill Myna and the Helmeted Hornbill, marine life like the Angel Shark and the Hawksbill turtle, or invertebrates like the Shrill Carder bee 🐝 🦈 🐢 🦅 ⁣
⁣
There are endangered species in every country on earth. Find out how you can support the conservation and preservation of endangered species in your pocket of the world 🌻🐘💚⁣

  • One football field of forest is cleared every second. Forests that were once home to thousands of indigenous peoples and animals. Murdered so their land can be stolen, then logged, mined, or burned and turned into plantations. The thieves responsible for this now billionaires and looked up upon as successful businessmen.
Forests store and harbor more carbon than any other habitat on land and give us the oxygen we need to breath, but in their eyes money is more important than air.
We have entered the six mass extinction. No longer do we have rhinoceros in Borneo, tigers in Laos, or Baiji river dolphins in rivers, all lost within my lifetime.
I first visited Indonesian Borneo almost 7 years ago, I can not unsee the destruction I witnessed upon my return. Entire ecosystems full of biodiversity, the oldest rainforest forest on our planet, home to some of the worlds rarest animals. Forever erased. Burned and bulldozed. I could not believe my eyes. I had fallen in love with a place just to watch it crumble. It is now a land of chainsaws, guns, bulldozers, trucks and corruption. Fragmented forests on the brink of annihilation are all that remained from before.
With little land left to pillage in Borneo these same corporations have their eyes on the some of the few remaining intact rainforests on our planet. Plans to build bigger, faster, and more aggressive are underway.
Already the clearing has started on what will soon be the largest palm oil plantation in the world, two times the size of London located on our planets largest jungle covered island, New Guinea. Please follow @thegeckoproject project to stay informed. The fight is not over yet. .

Palm oil is still expanding into some of the last great rainforests of Indonesia. So all we can do right now is look for alternatives, until the palm oil industry improves its deforestation policies. I don’t think we can live without palm oil, but I’d like to see the industry go through some huge reforms. One impressive company that I’ve recently come across that has been Certified Palm Oil Free, eco- friendly is @grinnatural They are a all natural Oral Care brand out of New Zealand, and support @orangutanalliance and certified by. Remember every time you purchase anything , it’s like a vote to support that industry and believe me each and everyone of us can make a difference, one day at a time. • Freedom for Kartini

The rescue operation done by our HOCRU team continues amid this pandemic Covid 19. Kemarin (Tuesday, 21/04/20), our HOCRU team worked together with @bksdaaceh and local people to evacuate a female orangutan from Kapa Seusak village, East Trumon subdistrict, South Aceh district of Aceh province. This orangutan, that later named Kartini after our national heroin, was found being isolated in an oil palm plantation owned by a local resident about 8 km away from her forest homes. From her general health check, Kartini was found in a healthy condition and could be released on the same day, back to her true freedom at her forest home at last. Kartini will be not the last orangutan needs our help. Therefore, despite of anything else our team needs to be ready on the road in every situation. Kindly please consider to support our team to hitting the road easily anytime with a new truck by donating through the link in our bio. Also, happy earth day, #orangutansguardian!

  • If China does not shut down all its wildlife markets its sending a very strong message to the world, that it really doesn’t care, and after SARS and now CoVid-19, really? I’m open for a discussion about this, people argue that these markets are the only place to get fresh food. Will the trade just go underground? But let’s face it, China has had tiger farms for decades. Industrial farming in western countries is just as bad and the exotic pet trade. it just all has to stop...Hmm 🤔 Also zoos across the world running out of money, and no longer able to feed all their animals, according to the BBC, and that was in Germany. Can you imagine places like India or Indonesia. The insanity of it all.. I can’t stand it.. #photographersagainstwildlifecrime #hidden #banthesnare #cutconflictpalmoil #lovetheleuser #stopwildlifecrime #covid

  • Reposted from @paulhiltonphoto If China does not shut down all its wildlife markets its sending a very strong message to the world, that it really doesn’t care, and after SARS and now CoVid-19, really? I’m open for a discussion about this, people argue that these markets are the only place to get fresh food. Will the trade just go underground? But let’s face it, China has had tiger farms for decades. Hmm 🤔 Presently we have zoos across the world running out of money, and no longer able to feed all their animals, according to the BBC, and that was in Germany. Can you imagine places like Indonesia. • Please share this far and wide. China is quietly going about it's normal routine, the wet markets are still open but China is also expanding to other countries by buying their resources. They dont invest to help, they invest to destroy, just look at how their money helped Zimbabwe, it didnt, it enabled them to destroy vast areas to mining, they have stolen baby elephants from their families and shipped them to China. They have to be brought to account for all the destruction they have caused.

  • Third Rescue within A Week Amid Covid 19 Pandemic

Last Saturday (11/04/20), again our amazing HOCRU team succeeded to evacuate a male orangutan from Pulo Tiga village, Tamiang Hulu sudistrict, Aceh District of Aceh province along with @bksdaaceh. This #orangutan, that later named Bangun, was found isolated inside a rubber plantation owned by a local resident about 7 km from his forest homes. From his general health check, Bangun was estimated about 25 years old, found with malnourished condition and an air riffle bullet in his right foot. He was then taken to the rehabilitation centre of @socp.official for further observation and quarantine process amid this #pandemiccovid 19. Our team needs to stay on the road despite of everything, driving miles and miles into a middle of no where just to rescue orangutans. At the moment, we have major problem with our truck that we use. So kindly please consider to support us to get our new truck to ease us to help orangutan in need by donating through the link found in our bio. Keep supporting us, #orangutan'sguardian.

  • More Rescue Amid Covid 19

Just a couple of days after the last rescue, yesterday (Wednesday, 08/04/20) our HOCRU team along with @bksdaaceh and @leuserconservationforum team as part of South Aceh Wildlife Mitigation Task Force worked together to rescue a female baby #orangutan from Jambo Papeun village, Central Trumon sub district, South Aceh district of Aceh province. This orangutan baby, that later named Sisca after our director, was claimed to be found in a plantation owned by a local resident with her mother was no where to be seen. Sisca was estimated about 10 month old and had malnourished and weak condition. Rushly, Sisca was taken to the safe hands of @socp.official to get further medical check up and rehabilitated to be released back to the wild one day. During the pandemic Covid 19, #wildlifeconflict keeps happening. Even this situation maybe used for #wildlifetrafficking. Therefore, keep supporting our team to be able to continue this good work amid this on going Pandemic Covid 19 outbreak by donating any PPE or send your donation through the website on our bio.

  • Orangutan Rescue Amid Covid 19 Pandemic
Amid the on going outbreak of Covid 19, conservation can't stop. On last Monday (6/04/20) the joint team of OIC HOCRU team, @bbksdasumut, @gunungleusernationalpark authority and local people worked together to evacuate a female orangutan from dusun Pardomuan Nauli, Bukit Mas village, Besitang subdistrick, Langkat district of North Sumatra province. This orangutan that was named Maria was found inside of rubber and oil palm plantation belongs to local residents about 7 km away frol her forest homes. Maria was estimated about 18 years old and has a good health condition so she could released back to the wild on the same day. This pandemic Covic 19 is indeed putting human kind in a very hard situation. However, we can't just #stayathome if any orangutan and other wildlife need our help. So keep supporting our team to be able to work safely by donating any personal protection equipment or donate through our web in bio

  • Orangutan Trafficking amid Covid 19 Outbreak

During the work from home period due to Covid-19 outbreak, #orangutantrade is still happening out there and this current situation maybe be used for #wildlifetrafficking. Recently a young Orangutan, that was put in a small box in a bus departing from Medan, was rescued by Forestry and Environment Enforcement Law (GAKKUM) Agency upon arrival in Pekan Baru, Riau province (21/03/20). This orangutan was about to be sent to Padang, West Sumatera, by using a bus cargo service. Thanks to @gakkum_klhk and please continue supporting us.

  • More monkey action on request... here is the full video of this macaque inspecting our equipment. As our worlds feel a little smaller, its comforting to imagine these creatures roaming wild in the jungle. The leuser is the only place in the world where tigers, rhinos, elephants and orangutans among many other species still roam in the wild. We share 97% DNA with orangutans, making them vulnerable to the same diseases as us, when we disrupt nature we cause harm to these animals and to ourselves. These images where captured as part of our ongoing collaboration with @ahkorstjens @hells_bells91 @bournemouthuni #sleepingtree #lovetheleuser #conservation #macaques #forest @socp.official

  • ‘Kinda feeling like the earth 🌍 just sent us all to our rooms to think about what we have done’ .
To me this is one of the most profound posts I’ve read recently. So simple but so on the money. Cruelty, industrial farming, deforestation, pollution of our water and air. Enough is enough. If this virus 🦠 doesn’t wake humanity up, then I don’t know what will. Sadly I think this may be our last chance to get it right. We need a huge and fast shift towards renewables, people say it can’t be done so quick. Hmm I don’t think we have a choice, with heatwaves on both poles in the last 6 months, it’s only a mater of time. More people need to adopt a planet 🌍 plant 🌱 based diet. Just look at history, I never recall broccoli starting a pandemic of any kind. #cutconflictpalmoil #banthesnare #endthewildlifetrade #stopwildlifecrime #lovetheleuser #thefirgottenelephants #earthtreeimages @racingextinction #outtherewithpaulhilton #photographersagainstwildlifecrime

  • It is in utter heartbreak and with complete despair that I share the news that Salma passed away yesterday.⁣
⁣
Salma slipped away with Endang, her main carer, by her side yesterday morning.⁣
⁣
There can be outrage and anger, hurt and sadness, outcries that we must do better, be better - all of which are valid and true. ⁣
⁣
But today and tomorrow and for a little while longer we will be quiet and introspective until the right words, answers and solutions come. Then we move, we get it right together.⁣
⁣
She was little but she was brave. ⁣
⁣
She was the one who was supposed to make it.⁣
⁣
Sending my love and condolences to huge circle of people involved in Salma’s case, both on the ground and from afar. ⁣
⁣
Dia kecil tapi dia berani.
⁣
Terima kasih banyak dan saya turut berduka atas kehilanganmu Endang, Edi, Dr Anhar, Dr Rosa, Ali, Ardi, Zek, Pak Rudi, Wiza, Bung Jamin, Bung Jamal, Bung Toyip, Muklhis, semua tim FKL dan BKSDA.⁣

  • LOVE THEM, BUT KEEP THEM WILD ♥️
I took this photo last year, while I was chilling at the river after a jungle trekking in Tangkahan. And it got me thinking; coexistence is often challenging but always possible. 🐘🥰Still, our main goal is to keep elephants out of villages so they can remain safe and to make sure that the ecosystem has its balance. Sadly, that is our biggest challenge, since they are lacking space because of the palm oil industry. Palm plantations are everywhere and elephants have no choice but to change their migration routes which often makes them ending up in inhabited areas.
In 2012, the Sumatran elephant was changed from “Endangered” to “Critically Endangered” because HALF of its population has been lost in one generation-a decline that is largely due to habitat loss and as a result human-elephant conflict.
Please, consider avoiding palm oil in your food and beauty products and help us help elephants 🙏🏼🌳🐘♥️ Do you check the ingredients while shopping? .

⁣
We are working hard to keep her stress levels to a minimum while we establish a routine for her. She has formed a relationship with her carer Endang who has a really natural way with her. ⁣
⁣
Yesterday morning we took Salma for a little walk out of camp. She is not letting her injury hold her back. She is spirited and determined, following us wherever we go with the widest and most beautiful eyes. ⁣
⁣
While there is still an incredibly long way to go in her recovery she is making little improvements daily and this is with thanks to the diligent care and cooperation of the BKSDA, FKL and assisting parties. ⁣
⁣
I will endeavour to keep everyone updated as best I can. Salma is my first priority and I have not left her side for more than a few minutes since arriving.⁣
