  • A flipthrough video introducing our recent release PEOPLE OF THE MUD. @luisalbertorodriguezstudio spent 3 months with rural Irish communities in County Wexford to make this sculptural series about the relationship between Irish cultural identity and how it is performed through bodily practices, whether sports, dancing, or labour. ⁣With sound on! 🎶🥁⁣

#039 Berlin-based US-Dominican artist Luis Alberto Rodriguez (@luisalbertorodriguezstudio) shares a self-portrait mummified in black duct tape. “During this period of quarantine, I had assistance in tightly mummifying myself using duct tape. My skin could barely breathe. My body had no escape and my eyes couldn’t see a future. Confined to my bedroom, I placed a camera on my head to serve as a third eye; a deep desire to use the lens as a tool for documenting and enhancing an unprecedented moment in my life.”

  • "Since the lockdown, I have spent most of my time researching – so flicking through art and design books, which feels like such a luxury. A recent addition to my collection is People of Mud by Luis Alberto Rodriguez –portraits taken in County Wexford, Ireland, that capture the local community in both candid and choreographed moments in time," says @storeyrobert, our latest Aesthete. • Special edition of “People of the mud” by @luisalbertorodriguezstudio designed/published by @jointsloose
•

People of the Mud is a powerful new series by Berlin-based US-Dominican artist Luis Alberto Rodriguez, made collaboratively amongst the communities of County Wexford in Ireland, where ancient tradition and modern life rub shoulders daily.

With a background in professional dance, Rodriguez’s work pays tribute to the metaphorical weight of centuries of physical labour behind cultivating the landscape and maintaining cultural heritage. Images of scarred limbs and hands, weathered faces and choreographed bodies appear as a cartography of this labour, reflecting how culture both shapes and is shaped by individuals. Elsewhere, we see the exaggerated glamour of modern female Irish dancers taken out of the glitzy ballrooms and into the fields, creating a rupture across time and space.

  • Bonne nouvelle, PEOPLE OF THE MUD de @luisalbertorodriguezstudio édité par @jointsloose a réussi à se frayer un chemin vers chez moi à défaut de la librairie !⠀Exemplaires signés 💥💫
⁣⠀⁣

⁣PEOPLE OF THE MUD by Luis Alberto Rodriguez uses the body to look at relationships between identity, tradition and the land in rural Ireland.⁣⠀⁣
⁣⁣With a background in professional dance, Rodriguez’s photographs from Wexford pay tribute to the centuries of physical labour behind the cultivation of local heritage. Rodriguez collaborated directly with farmworkers, Irish dancers, local communities and sports players to visualise the bodily experiences of labour, sport and performance within the community. Particularly struck by the intense physicality of the Irish sport of hurling, Rodriguez paused and reworked the rapid gestures of this game, creating sculptures out of bodies by directing and literally layering players upon one another.⁣⠀⁣

  • Our last feature for Black History Month - image from series Spectacular Home by Luis Alberto Rodriguez @luisalbertorodriguezstudio.
Louis is a self-taught photographer from #NewYork, originally a #dancer for more than a decades. His parents emigrated from the Dominican Republic not long before he was born. Formally trained in the prestigious #JuilliardSchool , his drive to leave New York landed him a job with the National Theatre in #Germany . By the time he celebrated his 30th birthday, Rodriguez had been dancing professionally for 14 years, and was disenchanted with the all-consuming career. Meanwhile, his #Tumblr was gaining traction, and friends urged him to pursue photography more seriously. With no formal training, Rodriguez was introduced to past and present icons through #photobooks – #RichardAvedon, #VivianeSassen and #IrvingPenn were particular interests. “It was like a huge map opened up in front of me, and I started seeing so many possibilities,” he says. He got his break when he won the Prix du Public at Hyères Photography Festival in 2017. “I’m so used to seeing things not used in a traditional way,” he told #BritishJournalofPhotography. “But I’m not interested in being gimmicky. I’m trying to get that emotional response, even when something is very abstract. It might be a tilt of the head, or a shoulder that’s higher – something that you feel and might not understand, but are intrigued by.” His series Spectacular Home is an “ongoing body of work created in [his] ancestral country the #Dominican Republic”. It “reflects on the nature of #identity while revisiting cultural signifiers in search of corporal emancipation”, he explains. Due to the effects of #colonialism, many Dominicans do not identify with the colour of their skin. Women straighten and burn their hair to escape their identity, uncomfortable in a body that has been oppressed. This series will “rewrite the Dominican’s understanding of their history”, Luis explains. “It will become an archive of celebration, a reclamation of existence”. He had his first solo exhibition, People of Mud at #PhotoIreland in 2019.
