Oh Mother, wake up please...

It was impossible not to shed a tear on seeing the video of the child waking up his dead mother at the railway platform. .

What more would it take for Supreme Court, the political parties and us to realise the pain of the migrants....

  • Fractions of Memory
I made this book years ago using photos of my home country (Iran) and the place I had migrated to (Australia). I wanted to express a hybrid identity that was shaping by merging memories from both lands.

  • "excerpt from Moebius Stripping", Istanbul Queer Art Collective, 2019 commissioned for PerformingbordersLIVE2019 .

In this performance to camera, @istanbulqueerartcollective members Tuna Erdem and Seda Ergul, cut into pieces the documents they had to submit to the Home Office to extend their ‘leave to remain’ in the UK. Once the documents, with the total weight of three kilos, are hand shredded the artists, clad in absurd costumes with birds for headpieces, proceed to turn them into Moebius strips: a ‘queer’ topological phenomenon where there is no border between the outside and the inside. This process is accompanied by a cheerful live voice-over, reading excerpts with topics that range from the migratory birds that visit the UK, to the rules and regulations governing the privacy of the documents submitted to the Home Office. The resulting mass of strips are subsequently attached to the poster covered wall of the MayDay Rooms, which to the artists represent the kind of archive they are eager to be a part of. All is done in a tongue in cheek manner, in accordance with the collectives’ firm belief in the “queer art of failure”. After all, one possible definition of ‘queer’ is shredding all identity and shedding feathers is one of the main motivations for migration.
With thanks to MayDay Rooms London and Kevin Biderman.

3. Lynn Lu, Strawberrymilkbath, San Francisco, 2002, Photos by Rob Schroeder “As a performer who makes site/context specific works, I am acutely conscious of how I am perceived by my audience: Do I pass for local? Am I an Other? Neither / both? In each case, how I am viewed becomes one of the materials with which I construct a piece.
Where I am seen as an exotic oriental, I fully exploit expectations. Where I pass for local, I sneak permission to (gently) take the piss.
Where a city made me feel more liked than anywhere else I’d lived, I put it to the test.” Lynn Lu, from the performing borders archive July 2018. For the rest of the interview by Alessandra Cianetti: link in the bio.

Books are notoriously heavy and bookcases are the biggest furniture in a house. They are the first to be left behind when you need to move fast and light, in flight. But our books were our most cherished possessions; we could not let go easily. So we decide to honour our books by creating a card for each one and deciding which books we would bring along in a single suitcase weighing no more than 20 kilos; the weight allowed on planes and the weight allowed to the Greeks forced to leave Turkey in 1964. The result is a “fluxkit” containing the thoughts, feelings and memories we accumulated over the years about our bookcase, “just in case” we end up dismantling in the near future, to go to another country, which we did exactly 3 years ago. There is approximately 2000 cards in Just in Bookcase, with handwritten quotes from the books and stamped to indicate our preference regarding under what conditions the book should be kept. This one, for instance, has the stamp “20kg” on it. #archive #archiveart #contemporaryart #library #queerart #migrantart #jeanettewinterson #istanbulqueerartcollective #ulysses

Performed for the first and only time at Deep Trash in the Underworld @deeptrashclub at BGWMC @bgwmc
And this is how we described it back then:

The popular image of spell casting usually involves a “foregin” language: a dead language like Latin or an Eastern sounding language like Turkish. This is not limited to representation either. For instance in Turkey, spells are written and spoken in Arabic, a language most Turks don’t know. Arabic words also cast a “muslim sound” to what are, in most incidences, pagan rituals predating Islam. It seems that in the realm of the occult, “speaking in tongues” symbolises both our inherent fear of foreign cultures and our attempts at bridgeing this cultural gap.
In this spoken word performance, we will be articulating a text consisting of Turkish colloquial phrases used against “the evil eye” and an ancient Assyrian spell. The phrases will be repeated 40 times, which in Turkey is believed to be the number of repetitions necessary for a phrase to attain supernatural powers. As we repeat the words we will be literalizing some of the phrases, by using skewers to stab 40 “eyes”. #liveart #performanceart #performance #londonart #migrantart #queerart #istanbulqueerartcollective

So we decide to honour our books by creating a card for each one and deciding which books we would bring along in a single suitcase weighing no more than 20 kilos; the weight allowed on planes and the weight allowed to the Greeks forced to leave Turkey in 1964. The result is a “fluxkit” containing the thoughts, feelings and memories we accumulated over the years about our bookcase, “just in case” we end up dismantling in the near future, to go to another country, which we did exactly 3 years ago today. There is approximately 2000 cards in Just in Bookcase, with handwritten quotes from the books and stamped to indicate our preference regarding under what conditions the book should be kept. This one for instance has the stamp “no non fiction” which means it shall be kept if we end up going to a place where there is only fiction books and no scholarly books. #archiveart #archive #bookart #migrantart #queerart #contemporaryart #juliakristeva #istanbulqueerartcollective

  • #OpenCall for 2 Digital Conversations 💥💥
.
For 2020’s edition of performingbordersLIVE (May – November 2020), @performingborderslive and Live Art Development Agency are interested in receiving proposals addressing Live Art practices that sensitively explore the intertwined, complex and challenging relations between the environmental crisis, migration, collective care and performative processes.
.
The digital conversations can be explored and produced in any digital form applicants see fit. This includes writing, video, collage or audio etc, however, the conversations should be an exploration between at least two individuals or entities.
.
Whilst there are no restrictions on what issues, themes or ideas your proposal might focus on, we would encourage applicants to explore this commissioning brief through the lens of groundbreaking artistic practices, more than through activism-led actions, in order to contribute to performingborders and LADA’s ongoing research into how Live Art can create knowledge and initiate meaningful social change.
.
🔴 Extended deadline: 12 noon, Thursday 7 May 2020

  • “Los Dulces” :: “The Sweet Ones”

A migrant child enjoys a lollipop while his mother waits in line hoping to collect money for her handicraft. A cross border humanitarian organization buys the objects of art from the migrant women and resells to buyers in the United States. All proceeds from the sales in the U.S. go directly back to the migrant women when the organization returns to the border and buys more embroidered art from them as well as donates supplies to make their art.

Please remember the most vulnerable in our world at this moment in time. Many, if not all, cross border organizations have ceased crossing the border into Mexico yet migrants are still in dire need of donations and medical supplies. Please consider sharing any extra cash with organizations as they can get the monetary donations to those “al otro lado” who can buy supplies, clothing, food and medicine for the migrants. @kino_border_initiative @voicesfromtheborder @borderangelsofficial
Thank you.

  • Was inspired by a skillshare class. The idea was to draw a phrase that inspires you.
.
.

Well this is mine: homo niewiadomo. Its a very polish saying, roughly translates to "homo unknown", often derogatory, like when straights®️ see something queer, they say it. .
.
.
.
.

What do I like about it? First of all, I learned it from my mom (shout-out to mom) when she would talk about gay people on TV. I learned it was something bad, to be "unknown" that way.
But know I have found peace in the unknown, in the in-between, in the not-being-a-gender. I feel proud when I think of myself as homo niewiadomo. As a person where it is unclear what their gender is, what their sexuality is. .
.
.
.
.

I think people say it because they are afraid of us. They don't want this, they want wiadomo. Wiadomość. They fear the propaganda but they don't fear radio Maryja. .
.
.
.

I want you all to encourage the unknown kochani.

  • Migrant mourning
Wood, plaster, candle, roses
2020

Dedicated to my grandpa and my home. A little piece of Greece on the corner of our street in Brookline Boston. This is called an “eklisaki”, a small shrine dedicated to people that either lost their lives or escaped death. They can be found all over the sides of the streets in greece, with candles, flowers and holy pictures.
Ive also recently found that they are very common in Mexico! Not sure what the proper name for them is in Spanish but they serve the same purpose.

  • Thank you for this beautiful portrait @el.dye !!! I’ve been thinking a lot about the forms of intimacy and kinship that social media has facilitated for those of us who are displaced, perpetually migrating, seeking refuge and attempting to imagine a geography outside of illegality. As violent as social media has been, it has also helped to connect some of us with each other, which has been invaluable.
I met Heldáy via the interwebs after we were featured in an article through Bustle and a year later, we finally meet in the flesh and share little cuentitos y risas together.
May the universe keep connecting all of us so that we can envision together and make art.

  • Time to get back to it. 🖊Also a great way to refocus the overactive mind and turn all that energy into creative process.

One good thing about not being in school is that no one can “force” you to make shit bigger! Love diving in small formats and losing myself in the details. Letting the drawing take control and trace itself.

  • Image by @oliviaehernandez : This holiday season, @Walmart workers from all over the country are calling on Walmart to publicly commit to raise pay to $15 an hour and provide full-time work. While the Waltons build $16 billion in annual profits, the majority of Walmart workers are paid less than $25,000 a year - and are unable to support their families!
