No, it's not from outer space. Although this set up looks like from some mystical galaxy, this is a Belemnite, a creature that could only be from Earth (until there's significant proof of life elsewhere, ofcourse!). .
Belemnites belong to an extinct order of squid-like marine animals. In one of my favorite sci-fi novels 'Sphere', the author paints a picture of absolute terror with squids slowly passing by the research submarine, signifying the entry of an invisible alien. Reading this at a very young age surely leaves a mark. Just to get over that fear of underwater creatures, I had to pour over countless articles studying these animals. What I found is that though I am quite interested and comfortable around them now, we have but got to respect their evolutionary dominance and their ability to kill us in various different ways. ❤️
.
Having recently been delighted to find this tiny beauty in my collection, I thought it would be the perfect time to share what fossils are and how they are actually formed. .
A fossil, by definition, is the preserved remains, traces of remains or an imprint of a dead organism. Fossils can vary in size from microscopic (like pollen or bacteria) to macroscopic (like trees or dinosaur bones).
To be clear, a fossil is not the organism itself. It is only rock. Soft tissue of the organism decomposes fast and the rest turns into a fossil. Well.....it's a bit more complicated than this. Check out my next post on fossils for a detailed scoop on how fossils actually form. .
Fun fact:
Sue, the T-rex fossil skeleton, was sold for a whooping $8.3 Million making it the costliest dinosaur fossil.
Can't even picture that amount of money but if it was for a fossil, I get it. I totally get it. .

  • Ethnic tourism in the Amazon.
Wazare indigenous community is located around 400 km north of Cuiaba.

@gasparetour.pantanal is one of the few the travel agencies authorised to visit during the dry season which is the Pantanal high season, when tourists ask for tailor made itineraries including the Pantanal and ethnic tourism; Wazare and 4 Cachoeiras indigenous community are 2 very interesting place to visit and know deeply this culture as one night is included at the community, so time is available to talk around the fire 🔥 in the night, indigenous tales, culture, history of “owners”of this land Brazil.

This is an unique experience, in the pictures they are teaching techniques to hunt in the jungle.

Малышка Эмили пропала в прошлом году. Сейчас в моем районе меняют покрытие на тротуарах, и я обнаружил её имя, которое кто-то написал в память о ней на сыром цементе. Но оно было написано наоборот. И откуда-то снизу.

Little Emily vanished last year. Now they’re pouring new sidewalks in my neighborhood, and I’ve found her name in the wet cement, written in remembrance. But it was written in reverse. And from below.

This beautiful image is a turtle shell. You can see the interlocking hexagonal plates that make up this natural masterpiece.

Turtles have been around for 230 million years, and have weathered multiple catastrophic mass extinctions, including the one that killed the dinosaurs. But their future is threatened by yet another, as humans continue to radically alter the environment. Climate change is now a big threat to their existence.

While in the past, turtles may have been able to migrate if conditions became unfavourable, they are less likely to be able to do so in the modern era.

  • The first paint sample is down on foam board and I LOVE IT 👩🏻‍🎨 It’s @farrowandball’s #ColourbyNature collection in #DuckGreen - It makes me so happy that they’ve teamed up with @natural_history_museum for this palette because it’s one of my fave places to visit in London 🦖 and I love the idea of bringing the outdoors in. Super keen to use this colour in the living room once we move and I think I’ve convinced Neale! Because paint can look so different under different lighting, by putting it on foam board I can move it around easily and test it out in different areas, at all times of day and against different pics and accessories (like this print we picked up in #elnido 🎨

About two months ago we found a Cormorant who had died on the beach a few hours earlier.

So I decided to honor the beauty of this great fishing bird with an artwork.

The endless hours spent, by doing this job, have been hard and intense, as well as not being a taxidermist.

Constancy and tenacity have been indispensable for assembling all the skeletal system of this wonderful creature of nature. ❤️ #taxidermy

2019.5.23.THU...その⑨

12:13
自然史博物館グリーンゾーンの
Mineralsの奥、The Vaultへ来ました。

Aurora Collection

Aurora Collectionの記憶しか
残っていません⑅

  • To prevent spreading corona virus we are melting down the big ice block by the ‘Pol til pol’ exhibition at the Zoological Museum ❄️ We do that to prevent people from touching it in order to make your visit at the museum as safe as possible.

You can still spot hand marks in the ice where people have touched it over time 👀

  • Happy #DinosaurDay! I missed the first one, but luckily there's two. Now that I’ve lured you in with dinosaurs, here is some important information: ⁣
⁣
George Floyd’s murder has provoked a response across the nation, and these protests are a symptom of the racism and lack of inclusivity against POC (people of color) that permeate our culture. This applies to all fields, including paleontology and science communication. ⁣
⁣
POC are underrepresented in these fields and awareness needs to be brought to the issue. One of the ways you can participate this week is by sharing posts from #blackbirdersweek and similar hashtags. If you know some more social media STEM events like that, please comment them below! ⁣
⁣
However, awareness is not enough. Change is needed. We need to be educated and POC need their voices to be heard. If you are a POC in the field of paleontology, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology is calling for you to share your thoughts. Email them at: svp@vertpaleo.org ⁣
⁣
As a white person, I am trying to better understand my own privilege, listen to POC and make sure their struggles do not go unheard, and use what platform I do have to raise awareness. ⁣
⁣
If there’s an event for POC in STEM that you think should be shared or you have resources on how to help further, DM me. I want to do what I can. ⁣

  • Happy #DinosaurDay! I missed the first one, but luckily there's two. Now that I’ve lured you in with dinosaurs, here is some important information: ⁣

George Floyd’s murder has provoked a response across the nation, and these protests are a symptom of the racism and lack of inclusivity against POC (people of color) that permeate our culture. This applies to all fields, including paleontology and science communication. ⁣

POC are underrepresented in these fields and awareness needs to be brought to the issue. One of the ways you can participate this week is by sharing posts from #blackbirdersweek and similar hashtags. If you know some more social media STEM events like that, please comment them below! ⁣

However, awareness is not enough. Change is needed. We need to be educated and POC need their voices to be heard. If you are a POC in the field of paleontology, the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology is calling for you to share your thoughts. Email them at: svp@vertpaleo.org

As a white person, I am trying to better understand my own privilege, listen to POC and make sure their struggles do not go unheard, and use what platform I do have to raise awareness. ⁣

  • The skull (cast) of Plateosaurus in the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery.
.
.
#Plateosaurus was a "prosauropod" that lived in the Late Triassic of Europe and North America. With its small skull and reasonably elongate neck, we can see hints of the gigantic sauropods it's lineage would become in the Jurassic.
.
.
It differs from these behemoths in that it was bipedal, it walked on two legs, and was (when compared to a true sauropod) relatively small. That being said, it could reach lengths of 10 meters!

  • Oregon fossil leaves discovered near my hometown of Eugene. 🍃🍂 These fossil leaves are about 34 million years old and record the transition between the Eocene and Oligocene time periods, which is marked by dramatic climatic change. ⁣
⁣
These fossils are part of the Goshen Flora, which includes plants like ficus, magnolia, gingko, alder, maple, and so much more. 🌿🍁🌱 The leaf impressions are colored by a film of iron oxide, which is what makes them stand out so well against the light colored sandstone matrix. These fossils are housed in the paleontology collections @mnch_uo. ⁣
⁣
Fossil flora is a great way to get a glimpse into past ecosystems. The Goshen Flora has a lot of similarities with humid sub-tropical rainforests of today’s world. Using fossil leaves, paleontologists have estimated that the mean annual precipitation was at least 90 inches in this part of Oregon 34 million years ago. Today, Eugene gets about 50 inches a year. So for all my fellow Oregonians out there, if you think it’s rainy now, it used to be a lot worse! 😂☔️ ⁣
⁣
📍 The fossils seen here were discovered on the ancestral homelands of the Yoncalla, Siuslaw, Winefelly, and Kalapuya peoples. ⁣

  • Meet Carnotaurus, a carnivorous dinosaur from South America. This odd-looking predator lived from 72 to 69.9 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous, perishing four million years before the asteroid impact. The name Carnotaurus means ‘meat-eating bull’, in reference to the horns that protrude from above its eyes. So, how did the “bull” use its horns? ⁣
⁣
Paleontologists have not agreed on how its horns were used. In the late ’90s, it was proposed that Carnotaurus used its horns like modern rams— slamming head-on against an opponent. The study proposed that the short skull and rigid spine would be well suited for absorbing shock from a blow. ⁣
⁣
However, later studies concluded that the skull would not be able to withstand rapid, forceful head blows and suggested that the dueling Carnotaurus pair would instead lock horns and push against one another. ⁣
⁣
Numerous other suggestions for the use of the horns have been put forth, from sexual display to injuring smaller prey. Nobody knows for sure, so we do what we can: examine the evidence we do have and keep searching for more. Who knows what surprising finds await. 🦖🔬 ⁣
