  • @emmawatson Happy International Women’s Day! Here’s to all the women that put themselves on the line and have broken silence around rape culture and violence against women. I am so grateful for your strong voices.⁣
⁣
In my continuing search for answers, I feel very grateful to have encountered Sex & World Peace by Valerie M. Hudson, Bonnie Ballif-Spanvill, Mary Caprioli and Chad F. Emmett and I’m excited to share it with you on International Women’s Day.⁣ ⁣
⁣
The book reveals that so much in the state of our world: security, prosperity, development, democracy, justice and world peace is clearly dependent on and stems from how we treat women and girls. With this highly readable and extensively researched textbook, the authors encourage a holistic view when it comes to national and international relations – the whole tree, not just the branches, but the roots. ⁣ ⁣
⁣ ⁣
With practical chapters on achieving positive change, the book also offers us personal and societal calls to action while emphasizing that states who have the most power to make change must centralize the concerns of women where security, legal reform and justice is at stake and this includes equality in the decision-making process. Sex & World Peace shows us how gender inequality is a form of violence that impacts everything from population growth to economies to regime type. For me, this book illuminates how we got where we are today, and along with it, a way forward.⁣ ⁣☮️🙏🏽✨❤️⁣

  • I’m on a big non-fiction kick here! This one is focused on the ramifications of the global insecurity of women on national and international prosperity and peacefulness. Anecdotally it made sense to me that when women suffer so does the rest of society. I was actually shocked at all of the empirical evidence reviewed in this book. It’s fact and argument heavy which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I really loved it. So much I just bought two copies to send to people and plan to read the rest of the books this quartet have published together.

  • I’m only a couple of chapters into this book and my mind has been blown away at every turn of the page. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It’s not that I didn’t know how bad some women have it around the world, but being confronted to how bad women have it around the world page after page (even here at home, in the good old US of A) is soul-shattering and inconceivable at times. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Yet, women are the strongest MOFOs in this universe, and one day we will get our chance to craft this world into a more caring, respectful, and egalitarian one for all humans and not just for some *cough*cis-gender men*cough*⁣

  • "Sex and World Peace" is absolutely in the top 10 books that have changed my life. (There are 7 "Harry Potter" books. That doesn’t leave many spots. You do the math.)
I was thrilled when @emmawatson posted about it on #InternationalWomensDay last month. If you have any interest in how the treatment of women impacts the status of a nation — and you should, because women are half of the world's population — I highly encourage you to read "Sex and World Peace."
✶ Fact: The FBI reports that in single-perpetrator/single-victim homicides, 89% of male victims were killed by males, and 90% of female victims were killed by males.
✶ Fact: Even in what many consider to be the most enlightened societies, such as Sweden, the domestic violence rate is still calculated to be as high as 25%.
✶ Fact: Women were not allowed to vote in Switzerland until 1971.
✶ Fact: The United States, with about 23% female representation in Congress, is below the mean.
✶ Fact: Rape in war has been considered a war crime only since July 1, 1996.
✶ Fact: There are 163 million missing women that should be here: they are missing because of egregious maternal mortality rates, sex selection, abnormally high suicide rates, excess childhood mortality, and violence against women.
🙅🏼 "Gendered microaggression is composed of all those many choices and acts in the routine day-to-day existence that harm, subordinate, exploit, and disrespect women...these pernicious norms are the air breathed in by children of both sexes, and they become as natural and invisible to that next generation as air itself. While each specific act of gendered microaggression may seem inconsequential to human society, the cumulative impact of millions of acts of microaggression against women is enormous."
📉 To access more FREE data on the status of women worldwide, check out @womanstatsproject, an organization started by Dr. Valerie Hudson, the principal author of "Sex and World Peace."

  • After finishing "Night" by Elie Wiesel, I had a hard time getting into a new book. It really has stayed with me and I highly recommend it! Just have a "feel good book" or a truck load of chocolate ready for when you've finished. (Definitely a dementor soul sucking heartache level kind of book! - we need book experiences like that too!) But now I'm ready for a new reading experience. One that I've been interested in for a while now. Have any of you read it? What are your thoughts on the book?

  • #emmawatson talking to Victoria Hudson on #sexandworldpeace
This little snippet really caught me in an #evolutionarybiology / #evolutionarypsychology kind of way.

It's both a scary and empowering insight; once the strategic political and survival implications are better understood, shifting away from certain strategies with other strategies as skillfulness and awareness of the dynamics arise, allows previously intractable systemic problems to be more maleable and shiftable ... I know Emma Watson is young still, but her willingness to seek truth through storms that rage, and to humble herself to those with wisdom, and yet still in this vulnerability to stand in strength and confidence and self respect - not just a leader and s good role model, but a truth speaker who participates herself in the journey of continual learning ... it seems like a recipe for personal and public success, and to serve the public good in a good way.

Thank you @emmawatson ,

Happy International Women’s Day!

Happy International Women’s Day!

  • I call this (infinite tie). It is an anti-sexal statue. The base represents a world separated by sexual war. Only infinite equality saves it. I'll give it to you💜

  • This book is breaking my heart. I've never read anything as important as this in school. It reveals just how marginalized women are. Everywhere. We are so sheltered here in the western world from explicit description of the brutality the majority of women face. If you care anything about the wider world, buck up and read this. And before you let your opinions of support or opposition towards feminist movements here in the US get in the way, this is an academic book with quantitative backing and is not opinion based. #sexandworldpeace
