The fifth step of an effective instep soccer kick is follow through.  This phase is all about slowing down the forward motion of the body after transmitting all that kinetic energy into the ball.

The body slows the kicking leg through eccentric contraction of the hip extensors, gluteal muscles, knee flexors, and the hamstrings. The slowing eccentric contractions are activated int his stage to help protect the body from injury and dissipate the elastic and kinetic energy generated by the kicking leg.

Hamstring strains are common during this stage due to their abrupt slowing of the kicking leg.

  • I only like to run outside when it’s warm and sunny ☀️ I find it helps me to stay loose and prime in a shorter amount of time than when it’s cold. It’s so, so, so important to prime your body properly before doing high-impact exercise like jogging or running. Just 10 minutes of dynamic stretching and walking before you run can help you to avoid injury by firing up the muscles and your cardiovascular system. Some of the top players are great at dribbling and running with the ball under control. Rather than restricting it, dribbling should be enhanced and nurtured.

These are few basic skills and moves that done consistently will improve your ability to run with the ball at feet. Do each variation 4-6 times or until feeling satisfied with the quality. Maintaining the ball under control is the main focus to improve in both, small and large spaces. 💯📈

As a coach, I try not to restrict young players who like to dribble and show good skill at it. Instead, I address their intent and teach the context under which is best to dribble and what it can do.
